They are step-brothers whose parents married when they were late teens. One of them ran away shortly after the marriage. The story begins 6 years later. There are many flashbacks in the first two episodes.

He is not a scientist. He is a business person who is focused on what he thinks will be a high return-on-investment product line. He is self-absorbed. His behavior is pretty much what I expect from someone like that.
