I don't think rescue team is cold it's just their situation is different from a newbie. they are already dead ,worked hundred years and have a goal (reason they became reapers) if they neglect rules they might get dismissed and not achieve what they wanted so they are trying to be less emotional. you will see it in future eps.

There's a scene where she is trying to kill someone and another scene where she is being stoned. maybe she tried to kill him but failed and was stoned to death and this made him suicide. there's too many theories her red thread was cut off and usually that happens when someone suicides but he also has no memories and regrets something.
