I think I'm in the minority here. While I thought the k-version was overhyped, when I got around to watching it…
I totally agree with you, rainruma. This drama was really like a childish teen sitcom. Plus, the acting was really awful and fake. I didn't like it at all.
I really liked the dialogues and confrontations between father and son. I admire the idealistic and passionate Crown Prince who dreams of impossibile dreams, but I also understand the King's position and his realistic point of view. And this Crown Prince's idealism vs King's realism ''battle'' is exactly what I liked most about this drama.
Ji dam's character was really useless, from the start to the end, I really don't understand the purpose of creating such character. Well, the screenwriter probably was going to add the romance story line, I'm glad she didn't do it. She also could make better use of some characters like the Crown Princess and Na Chul Joo, but it's okay. The Crown Prince and the King were enough for me.
If you liked this one, I advise you to watch Tree With Deep Roots with Han Seok Kyu as King Sejong, the story line is more interesting than this one :)
I can't believe this is rated so high. Yes, everyone has his own preferences, but objectively, this is not a good drama. I personally don't like how historical chinese dramas are made, most of them look more like theatrical plays than tv series, but that's not a big problem if the story is good and interesting enough to make me overlook the poor quality. Unfortunately, that is not the case here. The plot is very weak. Full of flat, one dimensional villains that are there only to hinder the main girl and create ridiculous misunderstandings. There is really nothing left if you remove all these gratuitous evil plots and misunderstandings from the story line. Moreover, the main girl was really annoying; as someone has already said, she wasn't that strong, she got that far because she was really lucky and got help from powerful people. Her character was pretty 'static', no character develompment, no character growth, nothing, just the same thing repeating itself over and over again for 59 episodes. No, it's not worth it.
There is nothing to understand about the ending. The very last part simply tells us that he is destined to see ghosts for the rest of his life and that he will continue to help them to relieve their grudges.
I had very high expectations, I'm really disappointed. I know that they changed the script around ep.24/25, in fact first half was good and then it went downhill. I was waiting for the Emperor to grew up, but it never happened. A worthless buffon, a spineless, coward, stupid, whiny, selfish brat. Since the screenwriters weren't able to make him an interesting/deep character, he ended up playing the puppet wrapped in Ki's skirt throught the entire drama. As if that wasn't enough, when you think that he has already hit rock bottom, he turns into a drunken psycho lunatic with killer instincts who also rapes the woman that he says to love. What an awful character he is! A coward who brings an army to kill 3 people unaware of what is happening. He has to kill Wang Yu to protect Nyang? AHAHAHA Did he really think that Wang Yu will reveal the secret and harm Nyang? That was just a lame excuse to get rid of Wang Yu, another demonstration of his insecurity and cowardice. In fact he forgot to kill the other 2 eunuchs who also knew the secret. They wanted to make us to believe there was a love story between him and Ki, but I don't buy it. He wasn't her partner, he was just a puppet in her hands. She had total and complete control over him and since she knew that he was an incompetent brat, she had necessarily to take the reins of power. And since they couldn't make her look like the bad woman who uses him only for her own interest, they tried to create a love story between them, but in vain. She feels pity for him, she always forgives him for everything, she wants to protect him, but it feels more like a mother-son relationship, that is the kind of feeling they give me. Wang Yu, poor character! Joo Jin Mo's screentime was clearly reduced due to the new direction that the plot has taken. I really liked him in the first half but then he has been brutally cast aside to give that buffoon more screen time and keep the audience happy. Still Wang Yu remains a consistent and respectable character, although I didn't like his decision to die for Nyang, beside the fact that there was no reason for him to die, he was a King, and as such he had to put his country and his people in first place, that is what I expected from a man like him, but we know how much korean people love that kind of noble idiotic acts. (I know that he would have died anyway - couldn't win against an army-, but I expected him to fight until the end and not to surrender like that). About Nyang, at first her purpose is to get her revenge, then she decides to fight for Goryeo but at the same time she says that everything she does is for the sake of the Emperor, Yuan and its people, and then again it's all for his son and her own survival. At some point I gave up trying to understand her. What I liked was the power struggle (Team El Temur VS Team Nyang and then Bayan vs Ki), the political conspiracies, the dialogues/confrontations between Ki and Tal Tal. The part about Eagle House was a bit confusing and making Golta the head of the Eagle House was a big FAIL, it's evident that both screenwriters forgot the initial characterization of some of their characters; next time I recommend them to use some post-it and take note of what written so far. I didn't like the song's choice in some scenes, sometimes the song didn't fit the scene, for example playing Park Wan Kyu's song during Wang Yu's fight scenes was another FAIL, and the same goes for Ji Chang Wook's song played the morning after the rape scene. I loved all the instrumental pieces. I hope they will release another album with all the bgm pieces. Another thing I appreciated was the acting, even if Ha Ji Won sometimes annoys me, she did a good job portraying Lady Ki/Empress Ki and Ji Chang Wook's performance was really excellent, I remember the scene when he goes crazy and kills the general in the grand hall, really great acting there.
Sorry to disappoint all the TaNyang romantic shippers out there, but the last scene doesn't represent the eternal love of Nyang for the Emperor/she loved him from the start NO!! It represents the life of Ki, always torn between Goryeo (represented by Wang Yu) and Yuan (represented by Ta Hwan).
Guys i'm going crazy. I'm searching for the OST of this Drama. I mean the OST without voice with just music. Like…
Yes, I know. They used one track from Gu Family Book ost, but I can't find the one I'm looking for, I think I've already heard it before in another drama, but I don't remenber what drama is it. (It's not from You Who Came from the Stars)

Fast forward to the last 56 minutes. Dong Chan is tapping his nephew's shoulder.
I watched the scene again and yes, that man is shorter than Young Gyu so he can't be Woo Jin, but there are always the others two Dong Chan's friends. I'm not saying that he is dead, but we can't be sure. Some hints tell us that he may be dead, and others that he may be alive. That's why is an open ending, the screenwriter has given us some hints, the final conclusion is ours. We are just trying to 'examine' rationally every scene/hint given.
He needed to protect her in that moment. He remembered everything and the only one who could save her in that moment was him and so he did. After she survived to that day, there was no need for him to pretect her.

Exactly! There was really no need to create such super dramatic open ending. The story needed to have its right closure, so the characters. And the screenwriter, being a pro (I suppose), should know this better than anyone. But, since it worked with Iljimae (I don't think so, but it had a lot of success), she tried with this drama, too. If only koreans would give priority to the quality of their work and care less about ratings/money/public opinion, many dramas wouldn't have been ruined like this.
the ending, 1. Dong Chan is alive im 80% sure (see the scene where Dong Ho released in prison but he was barely…
And don't forget the man that was there to photograph the scene. What was he doing while all this was happening?
I don't know and I don't care anymore, I will just take it for what it is, just a stupid open ending.
