Have you watched Story of Ming Lan? Take Ming Lan for example. Imagine if that drama was cut heavily. It would not make sense for us to imagine Ming Lan who was very reserved and child-like, very shy and restrained...to be then so brave and daring etc. But the whole long episodes really brought us to a journey of her upbringing, her life events, her changing process..so that we understand and accept how the character changed...

The character development...hard to believe especially the ML. ML loved the world and wanted a leader that loved the world, and yet he submitted to his father knowing his father was greedy for power. It just doesn't add up to how they portray the ML. And the FL, they made the FL became 'side character' who only existed to aid the ML while the first half, the FL seemed strong in opinion. And the other side characters, like the daughter of FL's master. She could not have that kind of personality...you know, sweet and kind but then emotional and short tempered to even try to kill FL? Because if she really has that character, do you think the FL is so stupid to even think of her as the best candidate to lead the sect? It just doesn't make sense, no? Everything is so forced! That's why, either the story is really lame...or the drama doesn't get enough screen time/episodes to actually show us how the characters develop and change...

Well of course, I don't like draggy scenes...and hate 2ndary couples too except if their stories have significance to the storyline. I think it is mostly modern drama which fall into this guilt (always have 2ndary couple and spend quite some amounts of screen time for them!). But for most xianxia and wuxia, I really think anything less than 40 will remove a lot of important parts in the storyline...but it doesn't mean if it has 50 over episodes, it must be good. Because some dramas focus and drag on unnecessary scenes rather than the important ones...but sometimes I wonder, is it really their fault? Or it just so happen the important scenes were being censored a lot so they ended up showing draggy scenes...
