Drama could've been a lot better without the Tie Xin. She's trained in martial arts but we only see her spar with the Xiao Yu for a few seconds before turning into a crybaby who never finishes her sentences and tells both guys to run away all the time. Honestly every girl that showed up (and there were a LOT!) had more chemistry in the few seconds they spend with Xiao Yu than Tie Xin does in the whole series! I kept on watching for the second girl to show up.Also Tie Xin is very naive/obsessive (like she falls for Xiao Yu so fast and then blames him for not taking care of her even though he never made any intentions of liking her or the sort). Most of the other support characters are pretty good (esp. little fairy! would've been better if she was the FL).
Wu Que doesn't use logic and just gets swept by evil ppl causing many deaths around him with no guilt for most of the series (like he really shows no emotion- i don't know if that's the character or actor but so many ppl die b/c of his inability to act or think properly). Writer is wack w/ many female characters showing up only to move the plot forwards- Also many sexist comments/views (even women in the martial arts world look down at women who fight and the men like the Hua Wu think lowly of women - dude keeps saying he "won't fight a girl." Like wth is that supposed to even mean in a martial arts world??
Besides the secondary leads, the drama is pretty good! (skipped most scenes with Tie Xin).
2nd girl is worth the wait! She's as tricky and straight forward as the true ML! Their interactions are fun too! :D
ohsweethaven... but if you're easily offended or have western centric ideology i would encourage you to stay away
not rude at all, I think my term was actually too vague. I mean the concept of blackface, you can see the other comments to see what i mean. It has offensive themes against darker skin, but many people viewed it through western ideology of blackface rather than the discrimination within Thai culture. Still offensive to an extent because of the discrimination against darker tones but blackface has a stronger meaning to western society than others- that's why I mentioned western ideology specifically.
Yeah, I already requested that to the admins (to remove that tag "blackface"). It may sound disgusting to others,…
is it strawmanning if I acknowledge the argument, respond to it AND then decide to call out your hypocritical values as well? Btw is that the only term you know? You're abusing the term and not accepting your faults. You must have a lot of built up rage or something for you to not acknowledge your faults but call out others. :)
edit: I'm too busy to go on but if you feel the urge to respond and can't control it go ahead.
Yet, this show is rife with Western centric colonial supremacist themes-we do not have to wonder why.
I'm not strawmanning anything, the whole argument is on blackface but you side railed it to dark skin against Isan people first. "Racist chinese people and their hate for dark skin i swear...." -- Who's chinese ? and there you again being racist to another culture (normalizing racism against any non-black race i swear...).
Also, i cited your comments and responded to them, so you can't say I'm arguing against points you didn't make.
I also don't have another account, but if you wanna stick to your ego and make up your own "facts" to seem right then go ahead. There's no point in talking to someone who's ego is too big to acknowledge their mistake and IQ too small to actually understand the context of the debate.
Yeah, I already requested that to the admins (to remove that tag "blackface"). It may sound disgusting to others,…
-You could use another term that indicates discrimination like "colorism" like you used , but "blackface" implies the discrimination against black people specifically. -how does "blackface" send the message of the people being "good for [...] making people LAUGH AT THEM and CLEANING THE HOUSE" -" a half white person in the lead," - who? from what I know both leads are completely Thai (unless you're being discriminatory calling them by their skin tone)
-"Making people hate what they look like makes money." That happens in every entertainment industry- not just Thai. And again, I've already mentioned that making fun of the darker skin tone is not proper.
To conclude my argument since no one is getting it:
Using a darker skin tone as a portrayal of "ugly" or "humorous content" is NOT RIGHT and should be be changed in societal perceptions with acceptance and encouragement of natural skin color. BUT using "blackface" to cover the topic is WRONG because not only does it not define the situation properly, it also undermines the narratives of the Thai people who have been discriminated against because of their skin color, by clumping it under a strictly euro-centric history and perspective.
Further, your comments are the most discriminatory in the comment section. You have "called out" users for being "white" when they are not- so you just made assumptions of their race based on your own discriminatory stereotypes of "white" people. You also called out specific CULTURES for being discriminatory which clumps all the people within that ethnic culture-- again your own discriminatory stereotypes. I've also copied your own racist commentary to show how you say you're against racism but do the exact opposite- unless of course you only think its rude and racist if its against dark skin tones specifically.
"Asians can't complain about racism if they do the same shit in their own countries. " -->You blamed an entire race.
"this is why i can't cape for the "stop asian hate" campaign the media is trying to push lately because the asian community is pretty fucking racist and antiblack themselves. Especially Thai people." --> You undermined the hate and violence Asians got based on certain people who were racist and HAPPENED to be Asian. Specifically targeting China and Thailand.
" that doesn't make you less of a Karen or "culturally white". The Philippines is actually a good example of that." --> Again calling out an entire Philippine culture + "culturally white" is also racist.
" If you're supporting ideas that are meant to negatively impact people who come from underprivileged backgrounds or ethnicities, then you are pretty much culturally white (and technically genetically white with irish)." --> you're on a roll on discriminating against a whole race and even undermining someone's ethnicity because of a fraction of a race you don't like.
"Its always white people like you who want to act tone deaf to how dark skin people feel." -- another racist comment assuming someone's race based on your own stereotypes + attaching negative connotations to the "white" race
"Its called "free speech". I know its a hard concept for you to grasp being chinese " Some more racism form someone who's against "blackface" + free speech is what the users are doing but you're calling them out for it- none of the users are encouraging blackface nor are they spreading hate against a culture or race- but you are.
There's so much racism from your end that I am baffled by your argument. You should probably go study up what racism and discrimination is, how "black" people in society have discriminated against Asians as well, and reflect on your own position.
Yet, this show is rife with Western centric colonial supremacist themes-we do not have to wonder why.
- You claiming all of the Thai Chinese people to be "clowning" darker skin people is as discriminatory. -This is a remake of the original drama so it's not really a 2nd drama but rather a remake of the same. - "They will never put a dark skin girl in a lead role but its okay to paint someone brown and make fun of them?" --->>and I agree that everyone despite their culture/ethnicity/religion etc. should be allowed and encouraged in society to be casted in lead roles or positions in society, entertainment etc. AND I clearly stated that "it's not okay to use dark skin as a synonym for ugly." AND "I don't think its humorous to call out dark skin as laughable or ugly," in my previous comments.
So in the end I'm not normalizing the discrimination against darker skin, but rather pointing out that you guys need to stop forcing the "blackface" and "western" ideology on it.
I clearly stated that multiple times that you can be upset at them insulting darker skin tones, but you can't group it into "blackface." Besides, if anything, that view downplays the cultural and historical discrimination against darker skin in Thailand, as you ignore their culture and just stamp it with "blackface" which is connected to black people (specifically in West) not other cultures with dark skin. You are ignoring the narrative of the Thai people who have been discriminated against for their dark skin and just passing it off as part of the "blackface" history.
Yeah, I already requested that to the admins (to remove that tag "blackface"). It may sound disgusting to others,…
I'm surprised that tag even exists, like who searches up blackface to find a drama? unless its supposed to be a warning or something and even then the dramas listed under blackface aren't actually blackface. I also reported it but not sure if admin will do anything..
Yet, this show is rife with Western centric colonial supremacist themes-we do not have to wonder why.
I said all that to show you that it's not a western ideology implemented in the drama, but you didn't understand. Btw Thai was never colonized by a Western state, so those ideas did not arise from the colonial supremacy you speak of.
I never said the usage of darkening her skin was okay, I was trying to make the point that its not blackface nor is it a western-rooted discrimination. Besides silicon/prosthetics which are pretty much the same thing, the only way she could have disguised herself as using glasses or addition of facial hair or marks- which again could be offensive to others anyways. Further she is meant to display a character from Isan which is majority darker than main cities of Thailand, thus her darker skin (just like White Chicks had black men imitating white women- just because there hasn't been a huge history of racism against lighter skin tones in USA the movie is considered okay when it shouldn't be by your ideologies. And before you mention that they didn't make fun of white skin, that movie was filled with stereotypical attitudes). Just because some prominent cultural history exists in one are of the world doesn't mean it applies to all other regions.
Blackface in Western countries where its roots come from is offensive b/c of its history in the Western countries, similarly something offensive in Asia might not be considered offensive in the West b/c of different cultures/ history. The fact that you only see it as wrong thing because its supposedly "rooted in western colonialism" shows just how discriminatory your view is.
No one cares whether the darkening of her skin is unimaginative (that's not the point), nor if its juvenile or antique etc. The anger in the comments is based on the fact that she is characterized as an ugly person just b/c of her darker skin tone - but the commenters such as yourself are looking at this through a purely euro-centric approach. Not respecting the actual history of why darker skin is seen as unattractive.
I even stated in both comments that it's not okay to use dark skin as a synonym for ugly. My point is that people are allowed to be upset at the fact that they used darker makeup on her to illustrate the "ugly" concept BUT do not connect it to Western ideologies/history.
Further, most of the comments are written by the same user who is being discriminatory to other users and the entire culture of Thailand and for some reason China. When someone tries to educate you guys calmly, your only response is to degrade the other user and implement your western ideology again.
I don't expect a response but this could help educate other users to see outside of their narrow views and maybe do some research on different cultures and histories to know that the ideologies they grew up with are not as prominent in other areas of the world as they assume.
Yet, this show is rife with Western centric colonial supremacist themes-we do not have to wonder why.
"western centric colonial supremacy" like what? I agree that its got discrimination against darker skin - not the way she acts but b/c of the dialogue the FL says- but I don't see it as a western-colonial supremacy. I see it as the deep rooted culture that also happens to have negative connotations against dark skin. Just b/c Western culture and other cultures have a similarity doesn't mean its based on western culture. I don't think its humorous to call out dark skin as laughable or ugly, so I don't like that part about the script. But, comments forcing a western narrative on it are not right either. The world doesn't revolve around Western societies and ideologies though they try to squeeze their way in everywhere.
why is this tagged with blackface, when it's not mimicking a black person? I know she's coloured her skin dark, but that's not blackface since she's not trying to mock a black person. I don't think that colouring herself darker in order to become "ugly" is right but its not blackface.
