Thank you for reading and sharing, ClaudiaMz! I agree, boxing is the most prominent cue I've picked up in my K-drama…
"Now, regarding color theory, red is usually danger and blue is safe" it's worth mentioning that in Korean culture blue can represent death whereas its opposite red means energy of life. I found that because I was curious why the dominant colour in The Guest was blue when someone died or was in severe danger. It's also not unusal for film makers/writers to play around with archetypes which is why I don't immediatly trust characters dressed in light pink or white anymore xD I know the basics of colour palettes and movies, and I'm happy you mentioned Riverdale since its aesthetics and use of colour/lightning was what drew me in (even though I've fallen out of love with the show I still appreciate it... from afar lol) And I don't necessarily think colours need to represent something all the time to be part of the story telling, as you said it looks amazing and is pleasing to the eyes so I'm down to it anyways. It made me think that the examples of over-saturated colour also makes it look unnatural, since its mostly neon aesthetics, it's harsher and bolder and could emphasize intensity and some sort of pathos? With the dramatic lightning you mentioned, did you mean the lightning ratio? I don't have a great understanding of it I'm afraid but when I come around to it I'll try to focus on this the next time :) I've been obsessed with the Japanese franchise HiGH&LOW, which uses distinct colours for every fraction and really nice palettes! And one of my recent watches The Chosen that uses lightning and colours (mostly neon as well) like a guidance, or at least it makes me feel that way. The colour red representing the danger of the evil organisation and being used as, may I say it, a string throughout the show. I'm not sure of it though, anyways I think their usage of certain colours is noticeable (contrasting blue and red, contemplating green and violet etc.). It's a Chinese production with Sony as co-producer. Sadly I feel similiar as with Riverdale towards this show but it has some great shots! ^^ I'll be looking forward to this subject if you really do it

I'd be willing to rewatch The Guest immediately to give you a proper answer because I struggled in the same way ^^" They used a lot of red, blue and green, and even though there might be no symbolism behind it's colours that provoke reactions from the audience. Also a lot of contemplating patterns. And the evil lady dressed in white or light pink. I feel that blue and that eerie green were the most associated with the possessed, and everytime someone died it was blue. One of the 1st shots you see this is the detective trying to open the door, she stands in red and the camera shifts to the next room where the bodies lie into blue. Even the roof of the house was blue. Red being more representing of the living maybe? I think it's highly associated with the saturated blood on the show and used as a warning signal. I'd just like to know what orange in its prominent tones would mean then since it's also used in danger but I guess it's for the sake of the contemplating pattern. Regarding green and the villain, when Hwa Pyung fell ill and talked to the priest he was lying on a green pillow, surrounded by red blanket. When the father jumped from the bridge the green forest takes over the whole background. Not to mention their house lies in green hills the whole time. The tunnel is showed in overly dark green and there's a lot of green with some of the exorcisms, e.g. the hospital. But that's just my theory for now :'D There're probably also differences in daylight and nighttime. The tone in the former is paler and I think it was in general more yellowish or beige undertone? I think the most noticable use is the lightning of character's faces, especially red and blue as contradicting pattern... but well yeah I GUESS I really need to rewatch xD I also loved the use of colours in it so so much because even if it's "just" for the aesthetic it's very impressive on its own.
I always thought boxing is such a brillant technique to showcast multiple layers, especially on the state of mind of our MCs! It can be used bold or subtle, it's really that powerful. I've noticed it before because I love movie making and cinematography (and because it's very prominent haha) and your articles give Kdrama the appreciation they deserve, I'm really enjoying your series :) Would you also consider to write something regarding colour schemes? You've hinted it a bit with the Children of Nobody example and I'd like to hear your insights, even though it might be complicated because... well, colours. One of my favourite dramas is The Guest and the more I learnt here even the more I'm loving it! Hope you have a great day and can't wait for the next article~
You see I feel that some of the negative comments stem from an audience with different tastes. I see a lot of comments under shows I'm watching that are "I only like Romance fluff" "where is the Romanceee?" Just say it's not your preference and go. If you're a die hard noir and crime fan obviously you don't need to like Cruel City either but comments like these sound like reading a children's book and complaining that it doesn't meet your standards of literature. You are free to express your opinion and it's good to warn others that are maybe also not in the target audience but sometimes these comments give me condenscending vibes. Sorry if it's like I'm venting but I noticed that pattern on non-or not heavily focused on Romance dramas for a while and it's sad.
As a hypochondric I had to skip this after anxiously making sure my heartbeat sounded- okay? But I think it's important and informative to not underestimate bingewatching, no matter if it's dramaland or Netflix. Take breaks, stay hydrated <3 Thanks for this article!
It's really sad seeing old comments because he is such a great actor :( too bad he isn't a good person apparently, ugh. I just discovered him and thought he was really good as well, what a shame. Kudos to the actress for her bravery! Sexual harassment/assault needs to stop

Thank you so much for the link! I'm going to support you~ never thought I could see a Korean gay story in my fave genre (crime, action, mobster etc :D) THANK YOU I loved it, hope your studio gains more fans and recognition over time ♡
I CAN'T WAIT So lucky I watched this last winter so I won't have to wait long~ I want to see the bad guy squad again, and what happened to them after the events of 1st season aaah so excited!!
