People these days are super picky about the ships....
@MysticLullaby The original story isn't BL, but having a male actor play female character who is pretending to male is an indirect way of making the story BL...which is why Lu Zhou was chosen at the beginning. They changed actors because Lu Zhou got really sick at the beginning of production...such a pity.
lol wish they stuck with Lu Zhou instead Chen Ming Xi... they lost a lout of audience bcs of that i think :P
@MatthewS - OMG if I'm 14 episodes into the show now. If I had known that Lu Zhou was supposed to play Ying Tai, but then they changed, I wouldn't have watched...especially with the actress they have. She sucks. I'm going to keep watching because I've come this far along and because I love Yan ZiDong and Lin FengSong, but uuggghhhhh hahaha I think Jiang Zi Le (from Love Is More Than A Word) is supposed to make a cameo too.
I don't understand how they could have worked BL into this unless it was a side-story. This is a very old Chinese…
Yes. It's one of the most popular Chinese of all time. It came out early last year. The production quality is high, the acting is great and the story is beautiful. Don't worry, it has happy ending. ;) Technically speaking, there's no BL, but there's a "couple" who fans speculate are actually gay, but it's extremely subtle. You wouldn't know unless someone pointed specific things out to you during the show about them.
Firstly, I'm not sure what a direct translation of the Thai title of this movie is, but I don't think it should be "Love Next Door" as the movie doesn't delve too much into the "love" part. Other than that, the story is just ok. The circumstances under which everything happens are a little shaky (as in you may find yourself asking, "Who would do something like this?" when you see Khao's actions). The acting was fine from the two leads, but there wasn't too much room in the movie for their characters to develop more (maybe in the sequel?).
There's also a LOT OF SEXUALITY in this movie (not that you wouldn't get that from the first sentence of the plot summary), but not just actual sex scenes, but even the camera angles in regular scenes (crotch/ass everywhere).
Want a relatively quick movie with cute guys, funny scenes that doesn't require a lot of thought? This one's for you.
Hi. Just from your comments it seems that this story is not going well. I will start watching this in a few weeks…
I don't understand how they could have worked BL into this unless it was a side-story. This is a very old Chinese legend that's been redone several times. This is just a new adaptation, so there's no BL in the story to begin with.
Also, the drama's just okay for me. Lin FengSong and YanZiDong are the only reason I'm watching. I think the lead actress' acting is bad in general...and she's supposed to be disguised as a guy, but nothing about her character shows that. She doesn't just act womanly, she acts like a very, very childish -girl-. She should have taken pointers from Yang Mi in 10 Miles of Peach Blossoms.
Hey Jake, that's what I was told by a Chinese pal - the censors were responding to accusations that too many…
The ending of Grey Rainbow was insulting to how good the rest of the movie was. I'd totally have forgiven it had they shown the boy to have heart/health issues at some point in the middle of the movie, but the random heart attack was just so sucky.
I saw Just Friends? and I liked that one too as well as the Takumi-kun series. I need to watch more Japanese BL though. I'm always weary of them because they come off as a little slow and low budget to me some times.
Well, we've been building up tensions (in a good and even way, I think), but there are only four episodes left, so I'm expecting things to get really good from here on out...let's see!
Story wise, well, it's a "love triangle", so I suppose we all start watching it with the assumption that it's doomed, right? Well, I don't think the ending was SO terrible given the situation. I really enjoyed the music and how good-looking the actors were (the eye candy made otherwise boring scenes much better). I didn't like the acting most of the time. I feel Tom Wang's acting gets a little better halfway through, but watching Charles Lin was cringey sometimes, even if I do think he's the hottest guy in this drama. We could have gotten a fuller story and more character development out of this too. I didn't feel like the character of Hai Qing made much sense. I understand that he'd be really interested to see Yan Fei after meeting him once, making out with him for five minutes then never seeing him again for a year, but the way he just jumps over to him from Ping Jun without really ever showing remorse or regret is just...odd. At one point he says the one thing he's certain of is that he doesn't want to lose Yan Fei (and this was around ep 6-8, I wanna say). If that's the case, then the question of "Do I really want to be with Ping Jun?" Never really existed. As soon as he met Yan Fei again, it was over...they didn't need to drag that part of the story out. It just makes Hai Qing look like a worse person.
I'd watch it again if someone else wanted to watch it with me, but I would do it in large part because of the eye candy and the shots of Taipei (one of my favorite places to visit and the bar in the movie is an actual gay bar I've been to a few times, good memories).
I wasn't disappoint. If u know how Chinese BL series work, u wouldn't be disappointed. Overall good happy ending
I feel like there are two types of Chinese BL. The first type is shows like this, Addicted/Heroin, and Like Love. These are stories in which it's clearly indicated that the leads are "in love". The result is angsty fans wanting to see more intimacy (not just physical) and the government cuts a lot of the story out so it ends up a little sloppy. The second kind is like Love Is More Than A Word, Till Death Tear Us Apart and Men With Swords. It's never properly said that the leads are "in love" and the relationships between them are clearly defined, but in spite of that, the romance and love shines through.
So, I agree with you on this one, Liz. The ending was almost unforgivable. I wouldn't say it was a "waste of time" exactly, but I definitely can understand why you say that.
These were awesome for me for a few reasons: 1) They're REAL stories about the experiences of gay (mainland) Chinese men. With the government being so restrictive, we rarely get any insight into the average lives of China's LGBT community, so these little 10 minute windows were lovely. 2) They're not BL, but just gay short films. Most gay Asian films fall into the BL category and I love BL, but it was refreshing to have films about normal gay people. 3) For as short as they were, the cinematography was on point.
