Yes, we can pick and rationalize choices base on the best outcome, but when you are in his position, choices are merely a facade, a simulacrum. You would approach it with atmost consideration to everything, might it be asinine or irrational and auspiciously approach it hoe you think would solve the problem; a short-term solution. And that makes him authentic, a realistic character. He's still teenager after all.
