Took a class at Uni and we were told that you cannot show anything negative about China. So in the movie 2012, you get scenes where every major building in the world collapsed or was swept away under the weight of the flood; but no Chinese building was touched, nary a brick (HK didn't count, for some strange reason). Anyway, thanks to all the folks who shared the BTS and the OST. Everything about Road Home is lovely; even the translated book. It goes to show that a good director with great actors can deliver a run-of-the-mill story and make it shine. Enjoy!

Even before I read your review, I had fast-forwarded the show after ep30. So yeah, your review was spot on! I generally try not to judge a drama too much cos of all the hard work that cast and crew put in. But for me, those last 6 episodes were simply crash and burn.

Interesting juxtaposition: The girls are all highborn — well-educated and gently raised yet has been nothing but rude and ungracious. In contrast, CSS, who has not had the benefit of a 'proper' education, and is supposedly uncouth and wild, yet has shown such wit and gumption, and great understanding beyond the superficial. She is grace under fire.
The bobble head toy — beaten, trampled upon, and finally resurrected [with a plaster!] — sums up LJM's life, and his relationship with NM. It continues to bobble, with a smile. :)

It comes immediately after the end of the show; before the song starts. But my TV version does not have it either. I think it's a nice little device to use to recap/add information. In the old HK drama Condor Heroes (1983), they had a storyteller tell the legend of Yang Guo and Xiao Long Nu to the masses, if I remember correctly.

According to the storyteller, JN loves copper coins. When she tried to kill XFN to no success, she became disheartened. So to keep her alive and to make her happy, he paid her with these coins; and reading the martial arts manual was a way for her to get paid. The storyteller seemed to suggest that since she was going to the land of Shu, she would have her 'love' with her to keep her alive. The storyteller also explained that she refused to learn sword skills from Li Chun Gang because she knows that once she has the skills, she can kill XFN, but the truth is, she doesn't want to. Sorry, that's the best I can do. My Chinese ain't so good.
Did anyone pay attention to the storyteller at the end of each episode? The storyteller recaps the events that has just ended as well as offer little nuggets of information. In one earlier episode, he mentioned that Huang Man ‘er is the third son. Did he make a mistake? Shouldn’t XFN be child no 3? In ep 34, he explained the reason behind the coin that XFN gave to JN; while in ep 35 he mentioned that when Li Chun Gang was numero uno, Wang Xian Zhi was just a kid who ‘stole’ the art of the dance of swords from others. This little segment adds layers to the story.
Hello, SSS is such a grand epic of a wuxia drama. Great storytelling, wonderful script — the repartee of the cast, the power play of the old men, the chess game of life — what's not to like? If you have seen those dramas in the 60s-90s, you'll know cinema magic has come a long way, and CGI of the fight scenes in SSS is laudable. To get an 8.1 rating, of course, is a crying shame. But kudos to those behind and in front of the scenes, for unpacking a complicated story and making it entertaining and suspenseful all at the same time for those of us in the mortal realm.
