That's exactly what he did. He kept her mother's matters confidential, so that she could decide herself when to reveal or use them.
Even though he's a warrior, he insisted on JY learning qingong so that she could rely on herself. And even brought her a teacher.

Then he'd have to tell her why she might be in further (permanent) danger, which meant sharing his ultimate truth. That would be a dumb thing to do imo.

Her mother was always in danger, because of what she knew and possessed. Her death wasn't his measures failing.

On the contrary, I feel like his expressions are spot on, no overacting, no trying too hard. Subtle when needed, deeper when required. His gaze however is full of emotions most of the time, which in his scenes with the FL, somehow gives the impression that his love runs deeper than her. Or perhaps that's the intention.
