I thought that scene was supposed to show that Hwal and Sang Un are the original Bulgasals because of the painting and the amount of research done on both of them. but then they twisted it again with Sang Un's memories so I'm not sure

if they are born in pairs then the original are Hwal and Sang Un if you remember the painting in Eul Tae's house. but Sang Un's memories don't make sense
