Whenever the angels talked about that topic he would immediately get scared and what happened on the cliff on the 999th time she went there (999th bcs we learnt the 1000th time was on ep11) HE THOUGHT SHE HAD DIED so he has been trying to protect her from the killer and from himself in some way.
Maybe knowing that the women he has loved before and the one he's in love with now are the same soul, he might feel more reassured.
