It's not only the lack of battles, it's just that type of show. Like people mostly talking until someone runs in and yells "something dramatic happened! offscreen!" Those kind of dramas can still be interesting but they have to work harder with good dialogue and characters. But if you like those parts you had a more enjoyable experience than I did. :)

-Why does Inha have such complicated scheme to frame Taeoh? Can't he just be like a normal chaebol and order some henchman to shank him? (EDIT: then later on he does order one hahaha)

-One good (?) thing, Inha's motivations were a bit more clear, even though it's just that he's crazy. He's like the male version of the wicked makjang villain who steals the boyfriend/life of the main character for no reason lol. But it's super weird because he PUT Taeoh in that position in the first place.

-If Taeoh became Inju's puppet over Hyewon being mildly threatened, couldn't Inha have done the same? Would have saved a lot of time and court fees. 😢

-He wanted Taeoh to "desire but never have"...yeah Hyewon was wandering into the prison 2 secs later anyway

-I laughed at that scene when Taeoh had to use the phone and Hyewon took half an hour walking to the balcony

-Hyewon had to get advice to just "ask for what you want" from Taeoh. Inspirational.

-Why were there two sets of photos burning? Did I miss something?
-Inju smelled the photos of T/H kiss scene while they were burning so he should be the fans' most relatable character now

Yes! It's the fun of seeing the mess unfold. Also, sometimes I enjoy watching disappointing shows which I know are disappointing. As opposed to a show that's perfect and then I stress the whole time waiting if the writers are going to screw up.

The only thing that got me through this part was the relationship between the King and Kang Kam Chan. They have an interesting dynamic with Kang being kind of a mentor/father figure. Choi Soo Jong was so good in the role, the reviews here are not exaggerating! I couldn't look away from him!

I remember Ji Seung Hyun from My Country, where he had a likeable presence as a kinda stoical background character.
i was SO amazed by his performance in this show as Commander Yang. Entire battle scenes were acted just with his eyes. I'm glad he got a chance to show his talent

I also appreciated that there were some actual strategies to the battles. Also the enemy commander wasn't just leading a rampaging horde, he had schemes of his own.

As a fan of old school historical dramas, this show was definitely reminding me of them, so I enjoyed it a lot. BUT, those tended to go on for 80-160 episodes, while these days it's rare to get even 30 episodes. Which is why makes me sad to say that I think almost half of those eps were unnecessary.

Up until ep 16 or so, there's (relatively) high quality battle scenes, no romance, and everything you want from a historical drama. After that it's like a completely different show. I was wondering if they suddenly changed writers. There are fewer outside scenes and people are just talking together in rooms like a soap opera. You could just watch up until ep 16, then skip to the last 3 episodes and I don't think it would make much difference.
