That's the reason for the ending, I think. Early in the series, our leads talk about how an open-ended ending is more romantic because it gives hope for more. I think that's what the ending is about, it leaves us to our assumptions and hopes.

Right?! I understand the ending of the 2021 version, it's a callback to the talk they had about how an open end is more romantic because of the prospects of more, I get that. But the writers just left too many open ends and makes me want an ending. At least the 2018 version HAD a legit ending. I found myself going back to watch the 2019 version to get to an ending.
