What disappointed you? And what were your expectations?Just curious.
I find all the drama interesting, for the evolution of the characters to happen.

I'm halfway through the book now. I know there really is going to be this change in the story, due to the spoilers I've read from those who have read all 246 chapters of the book. I'm still on 130.

Yes you're quite right that they become what they are today because of what they went through in the past. But…
This moment of open hearts, openly expressed sweetness is part of the plot of the book (but it hasn't arrived in the drama yet). This element of hurting each other (this is part of the plot of the novel). But there will be many beautiful scenes in this story, and they become even more impactful and convincing, due to the evolution that their characters will have to go through. In the special documentary trailer, the main couple says exactly this (that these characters will go through changes, evolution, personality development throughout the story).
PS: And these stories of transformation are the most interesting, in my opinion.

@Yes It Is A Rainy Day -----This female writer of the book creates imperfect characters, with questionable personalities, but who gradually transform each other (into the type of person you mentioned: good-hearted, fair, courageous). Which is what they already are deep down.

PS: but in my opinion: people who are too perfect in a story are artificial, they don't convince me that they are really that. A story of redemption. From a bad or questionable path, to a more complete path (these are the most interesting characters), because they are conflicted, they don't want to be what they had to be (due to the adversities they went through in life), they had to become like the villains who harmed them, in order to defeat them.

@Yes It Is A Rainy Day---- SOKP was definitely a political drama, but TPG is way more political than SOKP. SOKP is also one of my fav cdramas especially since it has both my fav actor and actress.

@Yes It Is A Rainy Day -----Up to which episode have you watched? We're already on episode 17 (and the main couple is a mix of both elements. They're not monsters in any way, in the drama).
We can see that it is because of the love of those who loved them that they had to take this colder path to bring justice to those of the past. (But SZY fights for a more just emperor to take power. JTH fights to save a life).πŸ€”πŸ€”

Liu Xueyi's makeup needs to be toned down a bit.
I think he's perfect in every scene.πŸ€”

Because it reflects the original book (there he is quite aggressive). Here he is just desperate and jealous, but…
I think the drama wants to tell us (there is still no true love between this couple. Or they don't know how to show their love to each other yet. Their life plans are still above love. (The only truly sweet moment was when he saved her in the water. And when he prayed for her in the temple. Or when he stitched up her wound. These moments conveyed true romantic mood.)(In the rest of the moments, their sweetness is quite cold and resigned.)

There is a moment in the book. I read up to page 129, in the middle of the book, when he is jealous. This was in a hiding place in the garden. (I didn't like that in the book). Definitely. (The drama, for me, is much more enjoyable to watch, these scenes.)

It's not going downhill. In the book he's not a real villain, he's a mix of this noble man, but at the same time…
No. In fact, he feels that she is getting in his way, in the sense that she has her own agenda that conflicts with his. This means more cerebral conflict, duel between them. (And of course, with the duality of feelings between them).

Well... that's kind of inevitable if they are ever to fall in love. Otherwise, their story is pretty much just…
As it seems, it is following the book. This moment of romantic tension is the excuse for their duel of intelligence to continue. They will still ally themselves, (but with this mutual distrust).

Why do I feel like the drama is going downhill? I don't want to see the ML to be domesticated.
It's not going downhill. In the book he's not a real villain, he's a mix of this noble man, but at the same time he seems like a villain (but the book itself shows that he's not that villain). So, this villain charm would be softened. In the book it's like that too.
And the drama's rhythm continues to be very good. They found the balance.

Why are all the romantic scenes so cringe in this drama?
Because it reflects the original book (there he is quite aggressive). Here he is just desperate and jealous, but we can completely understand him.

Title The Princess's Gambit Spoiler
the most anticipated divorce banquet is coming πŸ«£πŸ™ˆ
In the book, Shen Zai Ye is a mix of a lover who denies what he feels, but shows it in small details, but when she goes to the arms of another man at court (he shows a scene there of great jealousy and aggression). I appreciate that the drama softened this and even showed a more convincing love on his part (already in this part of the story), half of the book , a love that he is suffered, jealous, aggressive but not in the same way as in the book, there he "crossed the line". In the drama it is better, it is a desperate, suspicious, but sincere love on his part.

wow the story is getting more interesting and intriguing. I really want to read the novel. Friends here, has anyone…
I read up to chapter 129 of 246. I'm reading slowly. The story has some changes, but it maintains the similarity with the drama.

My interest is dwindling in this drama. It’s like a roller coaster 🎒 ride. Some eps are amazing, then it…
But this strategy is common across all platforms. (It doesn't bother me, I like to know a little beforehand, it helps me to be interested and want to understand the reasons for this.)
