I think he is traumatized by something that happened in his previous job that is why he is the way he is now. These things get him to slowly get back to what he is passionate about.

I'm the same way. I think the Chinese are way better at making historical dramas, but this one is GREAT!! I'm on eps 2 and already hooked. Oh, I think Mr. Queen is also the best!!!
