Yes! Back when I was watching the first episode and didn't know what was going on, I saw that scene on the end credits, and I got so confused. Who's this guy and why is he so important? The visual language, that's precisely the term.

You make a really good point in trying to defend a character like Jing. I've read a lot of novels in my lifetime (π΅π»), but it's the first time I've encountered a traditionally good character who made my skin crawl as much as it does with him.
I often think of Jamie Fraser from Outlander as the ultimate good, naive hero, but he's such a powerhouse in both the novel and TV show, that no person on Earth could call him weak. Even though he's been tortured, he's been lashed almost to death, not to mention that awful, horrid scene with Captain Black Jack Randall. He's extremely naive compared to Claire, and on top of that, there's the age difference (in the novel, on the show, in real life). But the word weak doesn't come to mind. There are countless other characters portrayed as soft-spoken, greenest of green flags, but they are vastly different from Jing in terms of characterization, and they can't be considered weak at all. Far from it.
So that's my main gripe with his character. I should have been rooting for him from the beginning but I cannot. Which makes no sense, because why wouldn't I want the good guy to win? It's just like you said, I can't feel the romance. I feel nothing, only frustration. This is a pity because it is indeed a central part of the story, but it makes everything so hard to come to terms with. I'm quite sure that even if Xiang Liu's character didn't exist, I'd be rooting for Cang Xuan instead, or even FengLong. I wish I could see what you see but even reading the excerpts from the novel makes little sense to me.
You're most welcome!! It was difficult finding a perfect picture (actually, all of his pictures are perfect) because there were too many requirements. I thought I was having my (his) passport photo taken hahah πΉ
Isnβt it a bit difficult to get edits approved by the MDL admins? I can try to update it. Fingers crossed!
I submitted the edit request the day before yesterday and it had already been changed this morning! I'm so happy!! It was my first submission, and BOOM, approved ππ
