I think without the comedy genre it would have been better, for me I felt that the story wasn’t balanced one moment it’s very serious and sad and suddenly the next moment is hilariously silly which would’ve been better without , cause in my opinion the actors were trying to make it funny but it wasn’t , besides the ML character wasn’t suitable at all for comedy scenes

I watched a lot of Chinese drama’s but this is one of my favorites so far, I have never liked so many characters in one drama but this has a lot of good characters which made it very enjoyable for me that I couldn’t skip a scene , first of all the emperor which is my favorite character who is not the typical cruel emperor who doesn’t give a sh*t about his family and cares about politics only, he was sweet and funny and really loved and cared about Zi sheng and wanted him to be happy, the empress who was very understanding and loving towards shaoshang and Zi shang and treated them as her children , and she was not like the typical royal person who sides with her children despite their arrogant behavior , no she was fair and she punished her daughter instead, the crown prince was also very kind and caring for his family, but for the first time you’ll doubt that he is not suitable to be the future emperor… And let’s not forget about the consort Yui fei who you’ll never think that you might like a lot, it’s very rare in Chinese drama and even it might be the first time to happen that the empress and the consort have such a beautiful relationship as if they were sisters, she was so powerful and also fair and she always wanted justice even against her children and was very loyal , I loved every scene she was in and was impressed by her character… and her son the third prince who might not be likable at first but he’s actually a very good person which will be shown towards the end. But all of this doesn’t mean that there aren’t any bad characters, there is BUT they all get what they deserve , justice will be served at the palace so there won’t be any frustrations. As for her mother she’ll learn her lessons and regret how she treated her daughter shaoshang

I was the same and dropped it when she started loving Yao and got betrothed to him , but came back because of the good reviews and completed it, and now it’s one of my favorites I can’t believe I almost skipped one of the best Chinese dramas , I suggest you skip some episodes until shaoshang and yao cancel their betrothal and believe me everything gets better and it becomes more interesting and completely different from the beginning , and a lot of new characters appear especially the emperor the empress and the concubine you’ll love their characters and acting you won’t even skip any scene
