I've been wondering that as well, and it might be a really interesting way to do the drama (or we could all get…
It'd be like a really extended bottle episode. Would definitely get frustrating lol

I'm so glad there are comments focused on the plot and characterization here. Its such a shame that so many normal drama watchers have been driven away by the controversy, and the only people left talking about it on other platforms are kpop fans who just scream about their idol ad nauseam. Wish ppl would have reserved judgement till all the episodes were out at least instead of writing it off before ever watching it. Sucks bcs the show keeps getting more addictive each episode. Sooho and youngro by the end of ep 6 were brilliantly tragic. His disbelieving smirk and realisation that they truly are star crossed was really compelling to watch. And jhi going dark caught me by surprise.

I just feel like this show is being ruined by the romance, it limits Soo Ho so much in what he’s allowed to…
as much as i'm looking forward to the romance, i agree that sooho's character would have so many more possibilities in a legit spy drama. hope jhi takes another role along these lines. one with preferably less controversy.

Timeskip could be an interesting route, especially if we get one at the mid-point of the show. The story could jump forward a few years to the characters all having undergone the necessary changes like sooho defecting and youngro no longer being a helpless student. Then they could give romance and redemption a shot.

Yeah, the redemption arc for Zuko is a great example, but a condition for redemption to occur is that the person needs to be looking to atone in the first place. right now, i think he is justifying everything that is happening as soldiers being (technically) at war, stranded in enemy territory, doing what they must to survive. He'll have to turn his back on the north to even take the first step towards redemption, & the only thing that could trigger something that extreme would be the north abandoning him and his comrades (which we were hinted at in the preview for ep 7) or them killing his sister and her baby. Whatever the cause is, i can't currently see how he'll have any time for his romance with youngro to develop in all this. It might just stay as tragic pining between them throughout the show.

Exactly! Which is why i think his journey will focus more on him defecting from North Korea instead of any romance with the female lead. But I'm sure the writer has something up their sleeve that could make me reconsider everything.

I'm thinking we may need to redefine our definition of romance for this drama, unless it does a 180 somewhere.…
yeah, i don't think sooho is going to have the sort of romantic lead redemption people are hoping for. nor do i think he wants to "redeem himself" in the first place, since he feels like he is doing what ge must to fulfil the mission. he's got other priorities, primarily keeping his family alive. any major character development he'll have will most likely focus on his disillusionment with his north korean masters and change in ideology. while he does seem grateful to youngro for saving him and they do have an undercurrent of complicated attraction, unless a major twist happens, their relationship will stay fraught and distant.

how is the romance gonna develop after that episode?😭
this is one of the main things that really interest me. the writing will have to get hella creative to make it work & i, for one, cannot wait

He literally had tears in his eyes during last scene of ep 6 when he was confronting Young Ro.
yes! i thought i was the only one thinking that but i watched it multiple times to confirm. it isn’t a pleased smirk, more of a "sad" smirk at the fact that she's decided to give herself up and that it might get her killed, and the tragic irony that the girl he's been trying to save to "get even with" might be his only ticket out of this whole mess.
