I agree but I also think that if he had went to the interview, like he said, he would have gone against the very thing that made him want to become a doctor in the first place. Networking is important but let's not forget that he is 17/18 and that what we prioritize at this age is so far from our priorities as adults even young adults. And I don't think he did not believe in Gun's ability, he was more worried about missing a milestone in Gun's life and regretting it later. It's understandable that he did not want to miss something so important just as much as I understand why it would have been smarter for him to meet with the doctor.
