I think HL became hateful even to her own child, she was compassionate when he faced his loved one's death. That made him into a a even more brutal and uncaring person. If Yi Ren had been less selfish in his final act toward HL and wish for her not be alone and reunite with LBW, i think would be a nicer course of action. But of course it is also HL's fault too, she could've try to get over Yi Ren and move on.
