Title Reply 1988 Spoiler
I experienced the exact same thing! I was working myself up to accepting Jung Hwan as the husband that I was actually…
I felt really bad for him too, but happy for the others. I think it was a situation where it wasn't possible for everyone to be happy in the end. Especially since they made the choice not to show all of the friends at the end, unlike 1997 & 1994, so there was no closure. Maybe if Jung Hwan had been shown happy with someone else, people would have felt better.

I experienced the exact same thing! I was working myself up to accepting Jung Hwan as the husband that I was actually surprised when it was finally revealed to be Taek, who I thought was the better match. I'm glad though, because it made the drama feel a lot less predictable than its predecessors :)

The problem I have with the article is the fact the drama does accurately represent someone far on the spectrum,…
Me too! I'm often worried about giving my opinions online, so it's not something I do lightly, but it's nice to have a mature discussion like this with both you and Kate :)

I totally agree we should definitely read everything critically and examine our biases. By stating one point is true, I'm not stating other points are false or disregarding them. I know that can be hard to get across, especially online. So, apologies if it came across that way!

I'm not sure where I said that I disagree with that!

I'm not saying the article is perfect. I think it's point was to bring up something people don't often talk about. Of course, I'm not the author, so can't read their mind. But all discussion starts somewhere, yes? I think we can all agree it's doing a pretty good job of drawing out different ideas here :) It's great that people are thinking about how autism and other issues are defined in the media!

I mean...as are you? Shall I recount and address every comment in this comment section? Like, I'm going to focus on the things I think are important, as would you in stating your side? Of course no one should be gullible and believe everything they read. I could go on forever about critical thinking on the internet, but that is a different discussion, no?

My point when I said "please, listen" is to get people who have no experience in the matters at hand to think about things differently instead of speaking first. If that was unclear, I apologise. Honestly, I don't like confrontation like this. I understand what you are saying, so hopefully you understand me, too.

I think we could go back and forth with "there are these people who agree" and "there are these people who don't". Unfortunately, I don't trust a lot of comments, especially those who call themselves experts, because I could say I'm a doctor, too. I'm not saying you are wrong to trust them, though.

Either way, your comment is of course reasonable, even if I don't wholly agree!

Firstly, I applaud you for taking on this issue when you probably were aware of the backlash you might get. It's hard to talk about serious matters when fandom can sometimes become defensive about the things they like. I hope that one day more people can accept that it's okay to like problematic things (it really is!), but you should acknowledge that they're problematic! Liking something problematic isn't a reflection of you as a person, but justifying those issues is.

Secondly, there are so many comments that are "I'm not autistic, but I disagree..." or "I know one person with autism, and it seems accurate...". The first comment - there is a time to voice your opinion and there is a time to listen. Please, listen. As for the second comment - autism is a spectrum. The point that's made in the article is about the perpetuation of stereotypes. Perhaps, you know other people with autism, but you are unaware because it's not the stereotype you're familiar with. As with racism, just because a person of a certain race may exhibit some stereotypes, it doesn't mean they are representative of the diverse range of people of that race. The reason that diverse representation is important is to stop people going "but that portrayal is the one I'm familiar with and is therefore the most accurate."

I wasn't going to watch this, but your article made me change my mind! There definitely needs to be more portrayals of mental illness in dramas, and I am here for people embracing differences instead of shunning them :)
