The rumor got blown so out of proportion from a small article which she initially laughed about until blogs started writing about it and her father's friends started asking her father about the director as if its true.
S.Korea has a huge problem with their rumor mills but the people that milk this the most are the blogs, magazines and industries who shamelessly force reporters to create provocative headlines for clicks and viewer advantage...
KSH is a victim of that. He was forced to have a press conference to speak on something he was accused of -he didn't have to but I commend him for standing up and speaking his truth. Not because he is a man-as the haters love to say but because he is beyond brave. Not a lot of people can do that.
Look at Cha Eun Woo -his case was probably a contention of the tax amounts that he didn't agree which and he could of contested but because he is a public person-he was made to pay and apologize -which is an admission of guilt....
Now imagine the accusation placed against KSH -that he was responsible for the death of someone he hadn't spoked to in 5 years. That he was responsible foe her debt issues and that he dated her when she was a minor. I feel sympathetic towards the ML because as you rightly said -I see fragments of myself in him -particularly the aspects of personal frustration but at the same time-his behavior is very 'selfish' because he imposes his 'feelings' of worthlessness on others through his behavior when everyone else -just like him is also just trying to 'get by'. So I think the writer want us to explore our feelings of his character in our own way.... Do I find him annoying? Yes! In real life -if I encountered such a character -I would definitely avoid him because he depletes your mood and can suck your energy ... Yet from a viewers point of view -who can see his internal feelings -I feel sorry because how else can he express himself? If he is not loud or disruptive -would any of his 'circle' friends even give him a little attention?
I find that he speaks a lot because he is scared of the silence -as once he settles in his silence -he'll realize there's nothing. So he's loud and disruptive to void his nothingness which on my side is a big sign of depression....
