I don't know if you're still interested in this show but yes it is from a censored adaptation of same sex work and no they weren't non-existent. The two FLs fall in love with each other. It is canon in the Manhua.

Also I don't think there is hope for a season 2 of this show but if god wants and uses a spell and we get a S2, then the same-sex element will probably be censored because of China's homophobia and censorship of homosexuality.
