I've read a news about a young girl being told by her parents to sell bread at the age of 5 or 6

Some parents even think that their children were a kind of investment. They'd put high expectations on them. They forbid their children to go to university cause they think it's useless and too expensive even tho our government already provides scholarships. If their children get a stable job, the parents believe that their financial condition would be better. Also, freelance jobs were very unpopular. They think it's unpromising. If you wanna be a freelancer, you still have to find a stable job in the first place. This kind of mindset mostly comes from middle to lower-class society

Actually, children being responsible for their parents debt is not a new thing in my country. I live in one of the Southeast Asia countries. Maybe, it happened in Thailand as well
