Ugh. Too many stupid fools.

LIang is an ambitious fool who has started a rebellion he can't finish and has thrown the nation into chaos Old Mo is a stupid old fool who lets an evil creep out of prison. And General Zhou Gau Lang is a stupid fool for not respecting and trusting his son. This episode is aggravating to watch because these fools are the cause of so much trouble, undermining the brilliant efforts & competency shown by Jiu Si & others. And I'm so proud of Zhou Ye at the end of the episode, calling out and shaming his father!.

Sigh ... with friends like this, who needs enemies?

The young Fan Yu, thinking he is protecting Jiu Si from bullying, ends up bullying all the other Yamen Runners - which is just going to make them hate Jiu Si! Ugh. What an idiot punk. No wonder he got into such bad gambling debt. He's stupid.

It's nice to see that YuRu's two stepsisters…

It's nice to see that YuRu's two stepsisters are not stereotypically 'evil' and one of them in particular seems very nice. Both seem enthusiastic about working with YuRu.

When Jiu Si tells YuRu that he wants to become an official

because he wants to be in a position of responsibility who can 'change the world" .... you could see YuRu's eyes light up. The maturity and ambition that he is showing is like a a love drug to her!. For a split second I thought she was going to grab him! Later, I loved the conversation between Zhao's uncles about Gu Jiu Si - what he wants, what his potential might be - and the bet they made on his future.

Madam Gu is so heartbroken

It's so sad to see how sad she has become without her husband. She looks and sounds so defeated. She hands over all her responsibilities to YuRu. YuRu and JiuSi both are becoming more and more in sync with the way they think. Back in Yangzhou some interesting developments happen as Li Zi Shang plots to separate himself from Wang and avoid blame for the atrocities they committed ... but Ye Shi'An over-hears their conversation. He may turn out to be a real wildcard.

Yet another highly emotional episode.

This one at least starts out with some much-needed-cuteness and romance as Jiu Si and YuRu are rescued and finally have some peaceful rest together. But after finally reuniting with Jiu Si's mother, we get some intense sadness as first the latter copes with the loss of her husband and then YuRu finally, finally has to deal with the grief of losing her real mother. This series needs an episode or two that isn't stabbing us in the heart in order to give us an emotional breather.

The aftermath

The aftermath is just as brutal as the prior episode as Yu Ru and Jiu Si learn about more atrocities and deal with their grief while on the run. Jiu Si breaking down over his father is heartbreaking.

The Storm Hits Hard

Wang Shan Quan and Lou Zị Shang's men brutally take over the city and murder hundred of people. The episode features some exciting - though ultimately futile - martial arts combat scenes but mostly is dominated by the bad guys winning everything including killing several important characters. This obviously creates a low point for the lead couple who somehow survive this together. Lots of heartbreak in this one. A pretty impressive 'final words' speech by Jiu Si's best friend..

The calm before the storm

Things are too peaceful in this episode. The steps to move the Gu family all seem ponderously slow. Lots of conversations and waiting. The bad guys clearly are going to do very bad things soon and as a viewer, I just want the good guys to move with more urgency! One key reveal is we now can categorize Luo Zhi Shang as the stereotypical "childhood friend who grows up into psychopath obsessed with the FL". The kind of idiot who confuses memories of childhood kindness for some kind of love bond. Ugh. I hate this trope. It's one of the worst, over-used plot tropes in c-dramas.

"Jiu Si. When will you grow up?"

One episode after Jiu Si stops up big time to help save the family .... he reverts to acting like a child, leading Yu Ru to ask that question. Things are getting very serious for the family now, with all the trouble in the imperial oourt. And there is no more time for Jiu Si to continue acting like a child.

The Whip Scene

My goodness. Gu Jiu Si totally manned-up and was so dramatic with the self-punishment scene. That was one hella emotional scene and he looked so badass at the same time. Bai Jing Ting's voice is so powerful that his speaking his sins while taking his penance really magnified the moment. He really stepped up to protect his family from potential damage by the scheming Wangs. What a powerful scene, especially this early in the series. I was not expecting that.!

While it's great that Yu Ru refuses Lou Zi Shang's offer

I don't get why she wastes time explaining all her personal reasons why. He already clearly has spied on her and the Gu's a lot and has too much information on them already. Why give him any more personal insights? I guess this is exposition for the viewers but it felt odd and unnecessary for her to be explaining any of her thinking to this total stranger. Especially one who clearly has a sketchy agenda and blatantly wants you to betray your family. Later, things turn extremely dark all of a sudden with a reveal of just how evil Lou Zi Shang & his conspirators are.

That was awesome!

Watching YuRu transform and ascend into her new Young Madam persona, take control of the Gu household and publicly shame her husband into obedience was epic!

So ... Gu Jiu Si sets a new record for emotionally clueless

Crazy how pretty much everything he says to Yu Ru is a mindless, insensitive insult to her. And he has no clue just how much he has destroyed what she thought was her life with his careless words. One bright light in the darkness for Yu Ru, though, is her new Mother-in-Law seems like a wonderful nice lady who will help and support her.

Very satisfying revenge

The show wraps up the revenge-on-Cheng Qirang arc in satisfying fashion. I like how the methods of revenge were all realistic and made sense within the context of the story. Nothing felt like it was pulled out of thin air.
