Alysha Johnson .This is Madam Mu. Her son is interested in Lan jie but she doesn’t like him. She refused his proposal because she complained about his looks, That was 3 years ago but the family is still eager for a marriage between the two but in the carriage FL did mentioned that will not be possible.

She feels threatened because the one holding the purse strings is very powerful in that household. If FL wants to be in charge then she will have to give up to FL because she’s not only the wife of legitimate son but also wife of one of the most influential man and she cannot afford to offend him. By sowing discord she protects her position not just the financial aspect but also in the eyes of her mother-in-law. In Chinese household the order of sons/daughter-in-law determines their say in the household. So she’s second(basically the first as there’s no oldest daughter-in-law) and the family will listen to her but now comes no:3 who has higher ranking than her. That’s why she feels threatened. Especially back in the ancient times it is important for women that they marry the eldest or older sons of the family.
