My personal opinion. I heard about 1983 version but Huang Rong left the impression of a smart girl for me, including for off screen as well. Barbara Yung might be the best Huang Rong on screen but she couldn't impress me on that because of her tragic story.

Agree. I personally think Zhou Xun is the best of Huang Rong. I watched the recent version, but I could only watch a few episodes, then I rewatched the 2003/2004 version (again). However, Huang Rong in the novel made me goosebump. She could be so evil :)
