They become monsters due to their inner desires , the more you have dark thoughts the more chances to become infected , If you can overcome those thoughts , you can save yourself from becoming one.

at the end the people were rescued while Lee Eun Hyuk stayed behind because he was infected and Sang Wook somehow got Hyun Soo and was taking him away which will be explained in season 2 I guess.
If you are already missing this series you should watch Alice in borderland , it's also a netflix original series and has got the same thriller vibes like sweet home

The monsters may look funny to you on the screen but I don't think it will be funny when you face them ( I am talking from the point of the characters in the drama)
It's because it's a netflix original drama instead of TV drama and generally Netflix series come out all at once. No need to wait for the next episode.
