the notebook contained the map of his soul, it contained his memories with his friends as well as the records of his failures at trying to save his friends basically. jin recalled being surprised that his dad went through the same thing he did and ended up being the way he is and forgot his friends. so you're right about it not really going too deep about the notebook, the entry was mostly just jin reflecting on the fact that his dad failed his friends.
the way it was hidden in the show does seem weird and that's why i always thought it wasn't hwan's. i can't imagine an outsider already knowing everything about each one of them though which is something i didn't consider until today. they seemed to have already been in a time loop from the start considering the scenes with the fire and the fact that there's drawings in the notebook of where cein dies and where jooan stabs his father. i really do hope this show gets a second season because it is a little confusing, but i doubt it ngl.

hwan / jin finds it in the notes book, although all the boys are present when he finds it from what i remember because they met up at the classroom in the middle of the night
Cein died, he committed suicide (the fire). I'm not sure what Jaeha did there, whether he jumped to commit suicide…
you can also read the hyyh bts notes, they have 2 books! the characters are slightly diff it honestly gives them more depth esp dogeon / namjoon. they're kind of long tho

there's always the possibility that they'll go back on it but i doubt it sadly. but also it's so common for kpop mvs to have gay storylines then the company or the members will say they are just friends or something so it's not unexpected for hybe to backtrack on the gay side of yoongi's character ):
