I've watched 6/8 episodes in less than a day and I don't want it to be over. It's so good. 😭 A highlight for me is definitely the discussion of same-sex relationships and their struggles in what is still a very conservative society. I love how supportive Uta's mother is and that she even has books on these subjects, meaning she's actually tried to understand her daughter's sexuality. It's incredibly wholesome.
Not gonna lie, the cancer thing ending up as a "oops haha this terminal illness diagnosis was intended for someone else" joke felt a bit on the nose. It was presented as a "oh no, how is this going to affect the body swap?" kind of scenario, and then they 1) swap back just like that, and 2) the cancer issue turns out to be a mishap they let go of way too easily.
... Other than that, I really liked this series, and it was nice to see Machida in a comedy for once.
It's marketed as a bromance but it honestly feels like something in-between BL and bromance, to be honest. Like the actors/characters want it to be more romance than the writers want it to be? Haha.
Question. Why does this guy have the same photo as Yu Inaba? 🤔 I know what Inaba looks like, but not this guy. And let me tell you this guy is not the same guy as the one in the photo 😂
Not gonna lie, episode 3 made me really uncomfortable with how close to home it hit. Don't get me wrong; that's what made it good, because it was so very realistic. Sakuko forcing herself to "fit into" the heteronormative world they live in and sort of letting her ex force himself onto her, him still thinking they're dating and thus thinking he's got the right to stalk her and Satoru outside of their home. And I can't blame her for not really telling him off, because how would she follow up her argument for it that he would definitely demand out of her? Considering how explaining her lack of romantic and sexual attraction went with her own family, if I were Sakuko, I wouldn't expect it to go better with anyone else.
This series is so very good so far. I'm still in slight disbelief that a series about aromanticism and asexuality that's so well-written and so realistic comes from a country like Japan where they're still struggling with traditional and conservative views in society.
I'm really liking this series so far! Thematically it reminds me of "Nishiogikubo Mitsuboshi Youshudou" in the sense that they're both series about food/drinks and people with their personal stories.
The SLS for me was so strong that I found myself disappointed with the ending, unfortunately. Even though I knew beforehand that, of course they were going to end up together, it still hurt to see Takuya be left behind like that considering the giant sacrifice he made in the end, too. As the man himself put it, he really is pitiable. He wore his heart on his sleeve, openly expressed how he felt, and - like mentioned in the article - was SUCH a great guy. That's, really, my biggest gripe with this series which I otherwise enjoyed a lot.
The bad thing about rooting for the side character is that... well, he's not gonna get the happy ending you want. :< Justice for Takuya Higuchi please.
