what a random reason. I don't think it's trying to compete with HIStory?
No, the mention of HIStory was because it came to mind when I typed that initial comment. That comment was very short btw and I just typed whatever initial feelings/thoughts I had after watching ep 1.
But to continue with your direction of thoughts, as far as I know the HIStory series are written and directed by various writers and directors, not just one. And Tawain has made many BLs. HIStory alone had 8(?), because of you, bromance, etc, and I've watched them all. Also not just BLs, Crystal Boys really made a classic reputation for Taiwan decade ago. So, if I am to follow your direction of thinking and analysis why HIStory was in my 'subconcious', and related it to CY, it's probably because I have already experienced various directors, writers, and series existed in Taiwan, with HIStory the most recent one I have registered in my mind. Hence most probably they gave me 'my' 'general sense' of Taiwan's LGBTQ+'s culture/standards/style in the entertainment industry productions, which CY seems different.
what a random reason. I don't think it's trying to compete with HIStory?
You have a point, that past good performances doesn't automatcally imply future ones will also be good. It's not realistic to expect continous good productions. However, it is also reasonable to expect a "surprise" reaction when a recognized good 'organisation/country' (sorry, I'm not sure what word to use) with good production histories to produce something below their standards. Kindof like an ivy league school accepting/gradulating subpar students one year. or a country with historic gold medal winners not winning anything one year. Not sure if these analogies makes sense or not, but if you get the essence of what I'm trying to say that'll be good.
But it's not solely because it's Tawian that I'm dropping. The series itself doesn't engage me. When I said idk before, it's because I haven't made the effort to analysis why that's the case and to type it out in the comments. If I were to explain myself now, what I can point out is the 'fillers' made me impatient. By 'fillers' I mean the scenes on shifting flours, plating cakes for customers. Maybe some viewers may see those as "artistic scenes" (not sure the wordings). Plus 'coorperations' of the managers, the street singing part, and the initial 'cold attitudes' of the singer were poorly acted out / not convincing, at lease to me. That funny female manager's hair style bugs me too. Etc.
I think, if anything, maybe it was too 'cut throat' (not sure if I used the right vocabularies again) of me to just drop CY after 1 ep and not giving it any chance. But within the context from my end, there're a mega influx of BLs in 2020. From not just the regular countries like Thailand, Japan, etc, but also new ones like Korea and the Philippines. At this moment there're over 10 BLs currently airing at the same time. Without counting the western ones. I don't have the concentration to watch them all. So I just drop the ones I don't like. I've already dropped 4 series and am contemplating dropping some more. LOL.
I'm super excited about Manner of Death airing in Nov. I love MaxTul, and am trying to read a bit of the novel and so far it's an attractive story. But you have a point, I better tone my excitment down now, or I might end up feeling let down. LOL I'm a loyal fan though, as long as MOD is not subpar, I'll complete it. ;-)
I'm really liking this drama, good storyline, great actings, nice pace. But I have to skip all the parts with the kidnapped girls, the exams etc etc. Couldn't stomach them . The cemented(?) corpses did help either. And the 'prayer' is creepy too, has to turn the volume down, and other suspences But it's a really good drama, can't seem to stop watching it. lol.
what a random reason. I don't think it's trying to compete with HIStory?
LMAO, my first thought reading your comment was 'what a random reply' too. But I find in MDL, many of us have a different assumptions when reading or writing comments as well as different opinions about the series, and the combination of the two can often upset one another.
So no, I was neither using HIStory as my reason the drop CY, nor was I intending a competition between the two series.
My comment was, I don't know for why, but I dropped CY after ep 1. I am also aware that Taiwan's recent BLs are well made, one example is the multiple series of HISstory. Taiwan have also produced one of the classic LGBTQ+ (G in this case) called Crystal Boys. Hence I was surprised by the quality of CY.
However, it's only my opinion that CY is not engaging. I'm certain there are others who like it. I'm guessimg you like it? So let us agree to disagree.
Why do you think Bright can't act? I am genuinely curious.
I repect your opinions and thanks for sharing them I know a lot of ppl share your view, that Bright is not a good actor.
I am Bright's fan, so naturally I'll disagree. But lets have a healthy exchange of information. We don't have to like the same things.
To Bright's defence I'd like to share this video of Bright in his earlier acting career in 2018. The project director, a senior member of the crew, was impressed with Bright's acting skills, his confidence, and his choices of roles, in an audition. He complimented Bright and explain why he chose Bright in this interview. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-DPYtuJN6I
Bright has been casted as Male Leads 7 times now in less than 3 years, since 2018, by different directors for different genres. So, within the profession, Bright is considered a competent and diverse enough actor to hold multiple important roles. That doesn't mean he's stellar, I'm certain there are plenty of actor more skillful and have more potential than Bright. But he's not sub par. His acting is recognized in the profession.
But I do agree with you that there are a lot of flaws in the series itself.

But as far as I can tell, the MDL details above seems neither like the manga 'hana yori dango', nor the korean drama BOF.
However, this still doesn't clarify how 'imitation' can be equated as the 'new BoF'.
No worries, I'll ask around for more info elsewhere. Take care.
