I guess limited options in the period drama genre. 1. Patricide is the ultimate crime. 2. A wife cannot be free of his family unless she is divorced. Any other option doesn't let the characters live in the society with their reputation intact.
This poison and limited time to live trope adds a sense of urgency to this political intrigue! I wasnt expecting the missing Song sister either!! The series keeps getting better with every episode.

The wicked step mom, the grandmother, the conniving Duchess, the sister, the female body guards... All so distinct and well formed.
