Yup, that’s why although this is like a harem drama but it doesn’t make him unfaithful. Let’s just assume that he only consummate once and that’s it, i’ve fulfilled my duty as a husband. That could be why he have minimal children.

I definitely agree! WeTv and iQiyi literally provide free subs on website and apps. If you can't wait (as a non-vip) then pay $5.99 (CAD) for 1 month subscription, this is no difference from Netflix. On top of that, these apps calculate views, so if you're watching it on illegal sites, your views toward your favourite drama doesn't even count.

As someone who has watched a lot of dramas, I want to voice my opinion a little bit. I think some of us have watched too many web dramas or romantic-comedy that we missed the actual history. It is perfectly normal back in that period for men to have several wives, now, you may say, you don't like it, that's fine but I think if you already considered the drama to be out of your comfort, then you should only comment on what you've watched rather judging it as a whole because your comment could be very misleading to new potential viewers.
I am not justifying his character but he is a man of the historical period, his duty is to get married and have a lot of children, who, someday will become a potential leader of the household. In several dramas like My Fair Princess, Yanxi Palace, men are forced to get married to women they don't know, on top of that, some of them can't even fight back because it's the Emperor's orders.
Here is my thought on Xu Lingyi. He may be portrayed as a man with many wives and kids. We can easily assume they were brought up by someone else and he was forced to marry them, even with Concubine Qiao, he didn't even want to marry her. He only consummates to his marriage because it's his responsibility, as the head of the family. On top of that, as concubines, you don't get to have a proper wedding, so a child is properly the only thing he can do for them. If you guys watch further, you would know none of those concubines even have a chance to interacted with him after their marriage and it was ShiYi who has most of the attention as of right now. Xu Lingyi is a smart person, he knows about his concubines' plans, he doesn't let anyone trick him but the only person he has to obey is his mother, no matter how unreasonable she is.
If you don't like what I said, I'll accept it but these are my personal thoughts when I keep encountering people saying "why does he have to have kids", "ew, he have concubines, drop."
I read the book prior to watching this and definitely recommend you guys reading the book. The investigation and storyline in the book is extremely great, the cases in the book were describe to the point i was hook and even got scared. Definitely prefer the book over the drama, in my opinion.
I heard that there is a high chance this drama MAY air in 2021, so we might not wait long as the other dramas (even though they just finished filming 2 months ago)

Out of the 3, 2 one them are historical which mean their novel going to be heavily based on history and political events, thats what make them draggy.
Drama tend to filter them out but still include some to keep the story flowing and usually dramas tend to go off on their off script so its not entirely base off novel, thats prob why some prefer dramas over novels

But the novel just serve as the purpose to back all the missing detail we didn’t have.
For the romance, there will be a confession scenes and a few hugging and kissing scenes. (Lol, slightly more than the drama)
