Arisu Ryohei—a listless, jobless and video-game-obsessed young man—suddenly finds himself in a strange, emptied-out version of Tokyo in which he and his friends must compete in dangerous games in order to survive. In this strange world, Arisu meets Usagi, a young woman who’s navigating the games alone. A group of ninth-grade students from a Japanese high school have been forced by legislation to compete in a Battle Royale. The students are taken to an abandoned island, each given a bag with a randomly selected weapon and a few rations of food and water and sent off to kill each other in a no-holds-barred (with a few minor rules) game to the death, which means that the students have three days to kill each other until one survives--or they all die.
Three years have passed since the infamous Battle Royale massacre, and one of the kids that survived the bloody game - Shuya Nanahara - has set up a terrorist group, declaring war on Japan's adults. A new game is established by the government, and the 42 randomly-selected school kids are this time given the task of storming the terrorists' island fortress to kill Nanahara within three days - or they themselves will be terminated.
