Lots of dramas without story have 16 episodes, this has good story can be extended further.

writer and director tried to produce a mature romance but it is too corny and cheesy for my taste and bit overacted by the leads, sure not their fault, it is written that way.

If they will look further into the notes, they will find that some of the notes are recently added. Then it will be all over. But i doubt that will happen since it's a family drama.

I have noticed this trend in k-dramas from last few years, in which the dramas having probability of sure shot happy endings. But still they drag it to the last few minutes of last episode with some non sensical tension filling the whole episode unlike early k-dramas .

They are trying hard to make it suspense but it seems clear that SML is the killer. otherwise nothing of importance of SML is shown at this point.
