I haven't read the novels -- I usually avoid them because I invariably end up being disappointed. But, what you say makes so much more sense. I mean, there was this whole build up to Dao and Yi's story and there was this entire secrecy around "the" incident. I almost missed it when it was brought up (also, if he was mauled or hurt by a dog... wouldn't he be scared of dogs in general? And getting hurt by the tiger pet makes so much more sense when you consider Yi's guilt). I felt like their whole story was just to serve up the fans that intimate scene. I mean, I loved it and it was beautiful, but I wanted more of their story. I doubt they are going to give us much considering we are now heading to the finale and well, obviously the focus is going to be Kuea and Lian.
As far as Syn and Nuea were concerned... was it just me or were there some "suspicious" vibes when Syn was chasing Kuea. I got the whole stalker/industrial spy vibes :D... So it felt odd that Syn dropped Kuea so easily. That storyline was a bit too neatly wrapped up.
I think I am mostly disappointed because I loved the start. I mean... to want to break up with someone you have adored for so long in episode 1. There was so much they could have done with the story. I mean think of the kind of impact Kuea's character could have had - to be able come into his own and grow as a person. Then, his hurt and betrayal at being treated like a child makes sense. Instead, that initial bold statement that he made, now in retrospect (and keeping ep 10 and 11 in mind) feels like a teenage tantrum.
Ugh! I had such high hopes. And I love Zee! And I so loved sassy Kirin. Aaah. this could have been such a mad, fun series!!!

I am so happy to see the comments here! I thought I was the only one getting frustrated at the turn of events. I think the show hit its peak with episode 8 or 9. I was hoping that the characters grew as individuals, and that Kuea gained agency. I was so disappointed to see his character slip back into the role of the Kuea of the old -- in fact, I felt like the old Kuea was perhaps more self-aware than this Kuea. Where is the sass of Kirin? Ugh. We got a weepy mess of an episode 11. What a cringe fest. I started watching it after KinnPorsche, and I skipped through most of it, and went back to rewatch KinnPorsche to cleanse my palate (:P). Especially the last bit... I mean really? Did Lian really think Kuea would fall into his arms not even 24 hours after his lie has been exposed??? Given that all this while, the characters have been more or less self-aware, this was just a bore! There better be tonnes of drama in the last episode (I am going to grit my teeth and watch the finale... and will watch KinnPorsche post that as dessert). Ugh. I am so disappointed.
