Have you read the novel, every character is FLAWED. Even XY stated in the book that she basically allowed this to happen to Jing, she saw a lot of things that were wrong and said she should have told him but she didn’t. The decision of every character led them towards their results. You should also look at the drama from different perspectives so you can get the message more. This whole story is about CX and she’s the catalyst that makes him King. XL sacrifices a lot for XY for her never to know (we see it because we’re watching the drama, that’s why we feel some type of way about her relationship with Jing. But she doesn’t know he loves her). When he was out battling people, she was having fun- she didnt know that he was doing that but we the audience did. XL wanted to give her what she wanted, carefree life, a place to live, a way to protect herself and a “boring” simple love. Jing wanted to give her someone that will always just want her. If he was just 17 and and she was just xiaoliu- life wld be simpler but once she was princess, things changed. Even she stayed for CX, she was no longer free until she was able to help him reach his goals. So Jing helped her to help CX and XL helped her in every else. The characters are so much more complex than this. And most of us are looking at a modern point of view. it was a very period.

CX: The childhood friend that had the longest crush but the girl bestie friendzoned him
TSJ: The nice and kind of popular guy at school, likes XY.
XL: The badboy transfer who is super hot definitely has some issues. Even though he’s a tsundere to XY, he gradually loves her but his family issues makes him realize he can’t be bringing her into it so he loves her a few feet away.

XY has a crush on XL but he’s always hot and cold and she can’t take risks at be emotionally hurt so she decides to date TSJ…
