I went back and looked at 28 again. Mu Dai is still in her right mind at the end of 28. In fact at the very last second it almost looked like “hard Mu Dai” had taken over. But it was fleeting.

Way too much happens in 27 and 28 for me to recap.
Bottom line is all our main characters are still alive at end of 28. At the end of 27 Mu Dai is buried alive.
The supernatural chicken guides Luo Ren to find her in time. But then Luo Ren is gravely wounded by Leopard and she makes off with Mu Dai again.
The group is off on another quest set by Leopard. Leopard holds Mu Dai hostage and also, btw, Luo Rens long lost daughter!

Yes chicken has a very important part.
