Netflix Korea (Netflix Services Korea) announced to Media Today on the 26th, “‘Goryeo Khitan War’ can be viewed in some Asian countries such as Taiwan and Hong Kong, but the overall overseas release schedule has not been determined.” This is the first time that a KBS epic drama has been simultaneously broadcast on Netflix.
▲ KBS historical drama ‘Goryeo Khitan War’ to be aired in November As Netflix recently announced 'Goryeo Khitan War' as a new work scheduled to be released through its service, netizens are looking forward to the possibility of exporting authentic historical dramas overseas.
Authentic historical dramas produced based on historical research were mainly consumed domestically, and it was difficult to find cases of them being aired on Netflix. When serviced on Netflix, it was often released overseas, leading to expectations for the global advancement of authentic historical dramas.
'Goryeo Khitan War' is a story about the process of overcoming the national crisis during the Khitan invasion during the Goryeo Dynasty, focusing on the story of Goryeo Hyeonjong (played by Kim Dong-jun) and Kang Gam-chan (Choi Su-jong).
It deals with the glorious history of the ‘Goryeo Khitan War’. Will KBS, celebrating its 50th anniversary, be honored with a epic drama?
On the afternoon of the 9th, a production presentation for KBS2's new epic drama 'Goryeo Khitan War' (written by Lee Jeong-woo/directed by Jeon Woo-seong) was held at The Saint in Guro-gu, Seoul. Director Jeon Woo-sung, director Kim Han-sol, and actors Kim Dong-jun, Ji Seung-hyun, Lee Sia, Ha Seung-ri, and Choi Soo-jong attended and shared various stories about the work.
'Goryeo Khitan War' is the story of Emperor Hyeonjong (Kim Dong-jun) of Goryeo, who united Goryeo with tolerant leadership and led the war against the Khitan to victory, and Kang Gam-chan (Choi Su-jong), his political mentor and commander-in-chief of the Goryeo army. 'Goryeo Khitan War' is a special project for KBS' 50th anniversary and is the 34th epic drama. A production cost of 27 billion won was invested.
Kim Deok-jae, Vice President of KBS, said, "We are presenting a historical historical drama as a finale program in the meaningful year of its 50th anniversary. We prepared very hard despite difficulties, invested a lot of production costs, and recruited top actors. “We want to repay your aspirations,” he said. “The epic drama shows how our ancestors grew up through difficult times. ‘The Goryeo Khitan War’ will be a work that will draw out the insights necessary to live in this era.”
Director Jeon said, "We have continued our history on this land for 50,000 years. We can visit and feel together what the driving force of the power that has continued and developed history among great powers is." He added, "It is difficult for the people to watch together." “This is a drama that gives you the confidence to solve problems well. Thank you for entrusting me with the opportunity to direct such a big project.” Director Kim said, “As KBS celebrates its 50th birthday, we tried to make it 50 times more fun. The license fee will prove its worth.”
Director Jeon revealed the reason why he chose the Goryeo period. He said, "I excluded the Joseon Dynasty first. Although it was covered a lot, if you look at authentic historical dramas, many of them were unfortunately frustrated in what they were trying to do." He added, "Except for King Sejong the Great or the founding period of Joseon, most of the main characters were frustrated in reality. "he said. He said, "We tried to prepare a historical drama that would give us confidence that we could accomplish something wonderfully and do it. It was a time when the Khitan was threatening peace in East Asia, and when it lost the Goryeo War, its will for hegemony was broken. Goryeo brought peace and prosperity to all of East Asia." “It was a major event that brought about a period of change,” he said. Director Kim emphasized, “I think this is the time when our people shined the most.”
The production team agreed that they put a lot of effort into realizing the war scene. Director Jeon said, "For the first time in a Korean historical drama, we demolished the site of a KBS historical drama and built a large chroma key set, and 99% of the Battle of Gwiju was filmed there. Two of Korea's leading CG companies participated," adding, "We also used historical research on war objects and costumes. “Well done,” he said. He continued, "I think the reason it hasn't been covered so far is because the technology wasn't supported. We used digital characters to direct a large number of people," and added, "I wanted to publicize the origins of Goryeo."
Choi Soo-jong played the role of General Kang Gam-chan, a highly resourceful civil servant who led the victory in the Battle of Gwiju, where the fate of Goryeo depended. Choi Soo-jong returned to the epic drama after 10 years with 'Goryeo Khitan War'. He said, "We work hard on all other programs, but there is something different about 'Goryeo Khitan War'. We will present a drama that is different from the historical dramas so far." He continued by introducing, “I came across the stories of heroes and the words of the people, ‘Wow, here are the forces that allowed us to become one.’”
Kim Dong-jun plays Hyeonjong, the 8th emperor of Goryeo and the man who laid the foundation for the Goryeo dynasty. He said, "I'm filming diligently. I ask for a lot of expectations, interest, and love. I feel pressure, and I think I have to have that no matter what I do." He added, "As I read the script, I wondered, 'Will I really be able to portray Hyeonjong well?' “I really wanted to play a role beyond that,” he confessed. He continued, “There is something different about it from sagas that I have seen so far. Instead of focusing on characters, it shows an era as a whole. The story of people’s lives between events comes across in a unique way.” He continued, "I really wanted to try a traditional historical drama. I wondered if I could take on the long story of a historical historical drama, and when I heard that I could work with senior Choi Soo-jong, I chose it."
Ji Seung-hyun plays the hidden hero General Yang-gyu. He said, "I didn't know much about history. While studying about General Yang Gyu, I thought it was more of a shame than a burden," and "I think the job of an actor is to deliver the value of joy and catharsis to viewers, and I felt a sense of responsibility. This drama. “I hope that all viewers of the KBS saga will know about General Yang Gyu and his achievements through .”
Choi Soo-jong chose 40% as the target viewership rating. He said, "Actually, there was an edited part of 'You Quiz.' We ranked the viewer ratings of Choi Soo-jong's broadcasts in history, and from 1st place to the last 10th place, it was in the 40% range." He added, "I can't do that now because the platform has changed, but 10th place. “I hope you hear the ‘Goryeo-Khitan War’ inside,” he said.
‘Goryeo Khitan War’ will premiere on the 11th at 9:25 PM.
