Its because director cut many of his scenes so its hard to understand his character if you didnt read the novel but his character was well rounded in the novel.

It's sad the director and screenwriter messed up with Jiang Qiaoxi character now people don't understand his sufferings. He is not a coward or hypocrite. If only they didn't cut too many of his scenes. If you read the novel his character had so much depth and he is only acting that way towards female lead because of his suffering.
