On A Shoulder to Cry On Mar 29, 2023
everyones complaining about the lack of a kiss scene but it might have been deliberate since both leads are in the same group and it might have been to eliminate any potential awkward feelings after?

This literally isn't a BL tho?? And it's insulting to call it that. BL is a specific genre that this does NOT…
BL isn't just a term, it's literally an established genre that dates back to 70s/80s japan. It's not a label to put on any piece of media. I don't care about people using the term when it's actually a bl series. My issue is applying it to any gay media, which implies that it's for straight women. I 100% agree with your point about fanservice and lack of diversity in the genre.

BL is a genre specifically aimed towards straight women that fetishizes gay men. That's not what this is. I'm not saying to stop watching or anything, just acknowledge it for what it is and don't apply it to everything. This is based off the directors life, so it wouldn't make sense to change the characters personalities and appearances. Also it's not lacking diversity by showing two "more masculine" men in a relationship. It's more the opposite since it shows that a gay couple doesn't need to have the heteronormative couple with one being "manly" and one being "camp". (Nohate towards men with that kind of dynamic). They do also show the more feminine gay character getting beat up and harassed, adding to the theme of conformity . Thiss show doesn't really have much fanservice at all, since any scenes that could be considered that are plot important and not needlessly thrown in. You're bringing up tropes that don't really apply to this film.

It was very poignant. It left me feeling nostalgic for relationships in high school, and a bit hopeful about relationships…
Also if you decided to watch this, read a bit about The White Terror. It gives more context and meaning that you might miss otherwise

This literally isn't a BL tho?? And it's insulting to call it that. BL is a specific genre that this does NOT fit in at all. This has more in common with Happy Together than it does with The Untamed. It's based off the directors life, and the plot is directly impacted by the setting of post white terror Taiwan. The homophobia is laced with the fear of persecution from the government. The main characters go through a lot of development, contrasting their personalities at the beginning, to those at the climax of the film. I'm also somewhat confused by your phrasing of the leads as "male-looking". Gay men ARE male, so they all look male. Idk what distinction you were trying to make?

People are gonna hate me but, I didn't like it. Or at least I didn't understand the point. :/
It's based on a true events, so the main point is to tell that story. but I think the point was showing how their relationship starts and what could have been, if not for the white terror in Taiwan and the effects on society, as well as widespread homophobia. And how the effect of time, place, and public opinion on LGBT rights, can foster healthy queer relationships. I might just be reading too much into it tho lol

i really enjoyed the acting in this but i feel like i didn't understand what ended up happening :') but to be…
There's a 30 year time skip. Jia Han learns that Father Oliver has died, so he goes to visit his grave. During the time skip, Father Oliver had left the church, moved back to Canada, and lived with his husband (? or partner idk if they were married). The preachers husband mentions that he had a student(Birdy) that visited a lot over the years and would have a drink with him often. Jia Han goes to that specific gay bar to see if Birdy is there. He is, sitting at his computer. Jia Han doesn't say anything but the next day Birdy approaches him and they reconnect. Jia Han invites Birdy to his room, Birdy says no, but they both say good night, in the way from their past that means I love you. Birdy leaves but Jia Han catches up again, showing that they continue talking. It then shows them as teenagers again, implying that they start a relationship again. TL:DR they meet up again in 30 years and reconnect.

There's some really tender moments, and some that were actually quite hard for me to watch. It's a very emotional film and not something I would recommend if you want something light and happy. But it's also not too dark and angsty. It's got it's moments of both, and some humourous scenes as well.
Its really worth watching the credits, as it leaves the film on a higher note, but I'm not gonna say anything else about the end.
Overall, it was a really well done film and I'm glad I watched it. I definitely recommend it.
