In the novel, there's actually a 3 versions of yai in each era commander yai, khun yai, and the modern version of yai. Commander yai is the one that gives the ring to jom and the modern version of yai is the one that gives the key to jom to open the box in the house that they renovated (this was the time before he time travels). After jom left in the khun yai's era he time travels to the commander yai's era that's why they didn't clarify it in this season because the season 2 will explain it.
