Growing up, I've always been a HUGE fan of the Fatal Frame video game series and overall I do not think this movie here is all that bad or anything, however, I personally really do not believe that it deserves to be part of the 'Fatal Frame' series. I mean, the extremely iconic camera obscure is barely any relevant at all, the backstory of the curse barely made any sense and overall I never really got the impression as if this story's ghost was really all THAT relevant to the story to begin, except maybe to make the protagonists act and eventually solve the entire mystery... which solution ended up being once again extremely far detached from what you'd usually expected from the video games. Overall, if you're looking for a half-decent mystery story with some super natural elements then I guess it's decent enough to be enjoyed, however if you're a fan of the Fatal Frame/Project Zero/ ZERO series, then I strongly do recommend you to not get your hopes up. At least the music in this movie exceeded far above my expectations, so heyy at least it has this going for it which is better than nothing! :D

I'm probably the least qualified person to discuss how Fatal Frame fails as an adaptation of its source material, given my exposure to this franchise is limited to Maiden of Black Water, and even then, that's because it features my girl Ayane, from Dead or Alive. But as its own entity, the film is a wonderfully moody and atmospheric production that at least understands the horror of the games, less so its spirit or mechanics. The visuals are definitely the film's strongest element. Director Mari Asato leans heavily on long, lingering silences with plenty of dim lighting, spooky buildings and soft, ghostly imagery, which attempts to echo the unsettling aesthetic of the games. It's undoubtedly creepy, but scary is up for debate. The narrative takes a more psychological and emotionally horror-tinged angle rather than relying on unnerving dread and tension, with the Camera Obscura conspicuously absent from the proceedings. Annoyingly, there are some compelling ideas about memory, loss and the lingering presence of the dead here, but the story is fragmented and underdeveloped that it all feels like a waste as characters drift in and out without any depth. The performances of the cast are fine, but the material afforded to them doesn't do them justice. Restrained and melancholic but lacking any form of strong emotional hook, anyone looking for an actual adaptation of Fatal Frame is going to be sorely disappointed here, relying more on its namesake than telling a compelling ghost story.

Not exactly like the Fatal Frame games, but still great

I love this movie. It is one of my favorite wlw movies. I'm obsessed with the two leads. They are so attractive. So many wlw couples throughout. I loved the story. The plot twist was so good. I'm not too good at predicting things, so it might have been a little predictable. To me it wasn't predictable at all. I was in love with the leads relationship. I honestly hope they make a spinoff of them, or some of the couples in the photograph room. They don't use a camera in it- which is a big part of the Fatal Frame series. I personally feel like it could be a stand alone movie.
