Set in July 1945, as Japan faces inevitable defeat, civilians in Manchurian settlements are abandoned when the army secretly retreats south to avoid alerting the Soviets. On August 9, the same day as the Nagasaki bombing, Soviet troops invaded, forcing thousands of Japanese settlers to flee with nowhere to go. Among them are Mizuno Yukiko, her family, and her former student Satake Saburo, who set out on a grueling 600 km journey to Xinjing amid chaos, violence, and despair. Meanwhile, soldier Toda Eiichi fights a losing battle against the Soviets. When he awakens wounded and alone, he discovers Japan’s surrender and the collapse of everything he fought for. As the remnants of the Japanese settlers struggle to survive in a land once filled with hope, their forgotten story of loss and endurance unfolds against the backdrop of war’s tragic end. Reviews
It was worth every minute of my time
To be honest I hesitated wither to watch this show or not because I really don't like historical drama or movies but because it talked about children I gave up and decided to watch it.The story was really touching and meaningful. At the end of the movie, I had clearly receives the message of the writer and I won't ever forget his lessons.
The cast were ok. The acting of the child actors were great but I felt that the main lead roles weren't fulfilled perfectly. The music was good.
I think this movie is a must especially for those who still wondering the meaning of life.
