Jin Yan Xi, a young man from an influential family, falls in love with a girl called Leng Qing Qiu, who comes from a poor background. They continue to date even though the difference in their respective social statuses prevents them from being together. Bai Xiu Zhu, a girl from another affluent family, also falls in love with Yan Xi, who rejects her and goes on to marry Qing Qiu. However, Yan Xi's restlessness, spoiled personality and boredom with life after marriage prompt him to have an extramarital affair with Xiu Zhu. He eventually breaks up with Qing Qiu and leaves her and his newborn son so that he can accompany Xiu Zhu to Germany. When the house where Qing Qiu and his son lived catches fire, Yan Xi thinks that they have died, and he collapses in sorrow and regret. However, Qing Qiu and their son actually survived. Yan Xi tries to find Qing Qiu at the train station and imagines himself hugging her. Qing Qiu is actually near him on a southbound train. Yan Xi gives up and boards a train heading in the opposite direction after seeing that there is nothing left for him at home (his family is breaking up since his father had been robbed of his wealth and died). The once loving couple now parted ways and never saw each other again. ~~ Adapted from the novel "The Story of a Noble Family" by Zhang Hen Shui. Edit Translation

A Beautiful Classic
The synopsis gives away almost all the story of the drama but i'd still provide a review. It was hard work finding this drama...trust me!!! I was obsessed with finding this drama because I loved the OST so much. The OST alone can motivate a person with a good taste to watch this drama. The first 10 episodes are a masterpiece but gradually u get tired of the filler. There r no side characters honestly...each character is given enough focus and storyline to not be called a side character.Let's talk about the main love story.... perfect!!! It is so bold of the screenwriter to explore the dark and real side which fueled this Melodrama. Storytelling is very intelligent and not hasty at all. There is foreshadowing of things to come but one is so blinded by romance that the ending is unthinkable but yes the ending is very realistic.
I am not a huge fan of melodramas but i still liked this but if u r by chance a fan of melodramas u should not miss this one.

Starkly beautiful despite the pain
I'll give a disclaimer now: I don't like this drama lol~So why do I rate it so highly? Because its execution, theme, and plot were done well, even if it ultimately ended up as a story not to my tastes. Dramas set in the Republican era (pre WWII) always have this certain sense of oppressive melancholy to them; you know the good times and lavish settings aren't going to last long before war and tragedy strikes, so every bit of happiness I see (especially with younger characters!) feel like they're on a ticking time bomb before everything goes south.
But the love story of the ML and FL, which started out pure but ultimately withered under the weight of reality, hit close to home. Leng Qingqiu Bai Xiuzhu and Jin Meili were also gorgeous in their roles, and the very name of Leng Qingqiu—cold clear autumn—was both super poetic and 100% her. I didn't like all the rich family bullying stuff they did against Qingqiu after she moved into the family, or how her husband loved what he couldn't have and then lost interest once they were actually married. In essence, he was flakey and constantly pursuing an ideal, which led to him having nothing in the end (seeing Xiuzhu rejecting him and calling him out after they met up again was so satisfying).
Basically, he got what he deserved but that made for a sad ending so in the end I was miserable even though it was a good drama, lol
