intelligent coming of age
This begins with exaggerated parody of characters and tropes but develops into real growth for all four. It's clever how they did that. Worth careful attention. The Japanese style of loud, physical comedy isn't for everyone. I'm not a big fan but through all of this, I could recognise and appreciate the skill and craft which went into it. If it had continued throughout, I might have thought 'not for me' but wouldn't rate it down - they executed a particular style very well. Moments in it had me laughing out loud too.
More importantly, it set up the female lead and the silly situation she'd gotten herself into well. And there were brilliant moments in there, like when she imagined herself standing up to the bullies but didn't actually say anything out loud.
Through it all, they wove in a lot of truths. You do need to speak up, Hatori was in love with her infatuation and Rita was dependent on her devotion. But through a tropey string of events, they did grow and come to love each other in a significant way. That's the heart of the movie - young people growing and figuring themselves out with each other's help.
There are tropes in there I'm not keen on - the claim that love 'doesn't need reasons' (emotions don't, but relationships do), or choosing the boy who keeps hurting you over the one who lifts you up. But both of those are more grounded than we usually see in rom coms. The love they grow into makes sense, and they give time to showing both its deep roots and the relationship, young but real, it's growing into. Rita gets it together more convincingly than most MLs. He wasn't striking out from his pain, just withdrawn. He took her devotion for granted, not realising it until Kosuke pointed it out. He tried to do the right thing in a situation where someone was going to get hurt whatever he did.
Adachi grows too. Her big scene, that was so well written. If you doubt the intelligence of this film, look there. Kosuke got some growth as well, though he already had a head start on the others.
And yeah, it would be great if sometimes the happily ever after wasn't the 1st leads together. This one though, they convinced me. Kosuke and Adachi are going to be alright as well.
For all of their skill with the over the top comedic exaggeration, for me it was the quiet moments where everyone shone. This is well done, there are layers and it needs attention to keep up as it shifts. Japan is amongst the best for intelligent coming of age, this is part of that tradition.

"Love doesn't need reasons after all."At first, I thought this movie is full of comedy, since there's so many comical expression or act (^o^) But, from the time the heroine become no longer heroine, the stories starts getting serious. The conflict is interesting and I hate the girl like Adachi (and why that kind of girl is always there?) Sakaken's appearance is somehow something refreshing and I'm become his fans since then (^_^) The confession to each partner scene is so great. That's my favorite scene of this movie (^_^) <3

The cast is really good especially Kiritani Mirei, she should be awarded. The story is a marriage between Kimi Ni Todoke and Bokura Ga Ita but on the different perspective/heroine. I really recommend this movie because it will make you laughed. And I feel like I was looking into the brain of the director, so crazy! :D

Why the hell i watched this stupid movie! Aaahhhh!
It was cute at start! But then it was showing the useless obsession of female lead over n over! The male lead idk was fool / oversmart / insane!
First of all he made a girlfriend! Then fl felt insecure coz she was by his side from childhood! So she confessed ! He kissed her but then rejected coz he can't leave her gf alone!
She made a bf on same night of rejection and now ml starts regretting and realising his love for fl!
There's a unwanted lost mother plot too !
I mean give me a break! They need to be in a relationship to realize their love for someone else!
I saw todome no kiss recently, so wanted to see more work of kento yamakazi! (Coz i avoided him for so long) BUT MY THIS CHOICE WAS WORST!!

The story, as we all know, isn't knew, childhood friends who turned to lovers but before that they need to settle their own real feelings and to achieve that they need to break some hearts first.lol But, that's what I love about this movie. Simple, funny, comedic at times and even though you have watched any other movies with the same story, this movie doesn't feel redundant after all. I love the exaggerated expression of the heroine. She was really good in her portrayal in this movie (although I haven't read the manga but I never thought of any slapstick moment in her acting here). For the guys, Yamazaki Kento was good, (I was going to comment on how should he put more effort in his character but Im going to believe that's how Rita should be portrayed based on the manga. For Kentaro Sakaguchi, this is my first introduction to him, but just like Hatori said, "he's freaking handsome". He is perfect to be Kosuke Hiromitsu, he has really played the role well. His acting and characterization is much better that Yamazaki Kento thus it can't be helped for the audiences to fall for him and have that "second lead syndrome feel". And yes, I liked him more. The story was perfectly made and I feel satisfied with everything. I just think they could've made some great moments/additional scenes out there but since they were following the manga, then it cant be helped.
I was just quite disappointed that they didn't even once played the movie Ost. I jsut love that song and its been on repeat in my playist. I was really waiting for it to be played somewhere in those cute heart stopping moments but, it didn't. It could've made the movie more romantic. Grr, they should really have added it then my rating would be higher. You will feel more their emotions with it.
I miss watching Japanese dramas, you know with those nonsense plots, exaggerated stories and reactions. But despite all that, you will smile, laugh, cry, you will feel like an idiot and despite al of that, they will tell you lessons.ahhhw those feels from Hana Kimi and Ataschinchi no Danshi did you hear me? hahaha

Very realistic and great story.
FL = Female leadML= Male lead
"A Japanese romcom that is realistic?! No way." I know it sounds strange, but I truly think that this movie is very realistic for a romcom. Before some of you start debating me, no I do not think that very single detail of the movie is realistic such as the cafeteria guy running on the walls in the first ten minutes of the movie or any of the classic Japanese effects that add humor to the situation (such as arrows hitting/ rocks falling on the FL when she feels defeated).
HOWEVER, I do think that the actions/emotions of both the FL and the ML are very realistic and I think a lot of people would act the same way in their situations.
Examples (spoilers will occur):
- The way the FL was treating the ML's new gf was expected.
She was jealous and very passive aggressive and when she wasn't getting the reactions she expected out of the ML's gf, she felt shock and was uncertain of 'her roll in the story'. Disclaimer- I'm not saying that the way she treated ML's gf was valid or something I would do, I'm just saying the way she reacted was realistic for an extroverted and jealous teenage girl.
- The manipulation happening between the ML and his gf.
This topic is a very realistic situation in which the MF's gf manipulates him into not leaving her, even though he wants to and isn't truly happy with her. The whole reason why he didn't leave her is because she had him thinking that she was unwell or sick when she really wasn't, and he -believing her- knew he would feel extremely guilty if he left her all alone while she was sick and he was the only person that she relied on. Not only does this manipulation make him unhappy, but it causes him to distance himself from the FL (even though they were close friends their whole life) and that is a very realistic situation that makes the audience empathize with him, especially if they've been in that exact situation themselves.
- The FL trying to move on.
I think a lot of people can relate to trying to move on when they don't want to or aren't 100% ready to. When the FL tries to move on with the 2nd male lead, she finds that she's not able to truly move on even though she tries and can't help but still be in love with the ML. The guilt that she feels when she breaks the news to the 2nd male lead is something that I think a lot of people can empathize with even if they don't fully agree with her decision.
There is more, but I feel like I've already written an essay and might start to be losing some people's attention, lol.
Overall I think that this story is a good watch and I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did based on some reviews I read before hand, which just proves that the only opinion that matters is your own!! Is this story cliché? Yes. But, I truly think you need to watch it for yourself at least once! Thanks for reading!!

It turned out that l would have been satisfied with either of the hero getting the girl. Trust me this is a big achievement for such type of storyline because most of the time you have huge second male lead syndrome but still want male lead to get the girl and other times you end up frustrated with the end because that lead does not deserved the girl.
Well enough with the male lead talk which l can go on and on about because Yamazaki Kento is my all time favourite Japanese actor and Sakaguchi Kentaro became my favourite after watching this movie. But the movie is more about our heroine who is funny, joyful and believes that she will have an wonderful love story with the her long time friend. I liked her character where she assumed no one would be perfect for hero than her and he chose someone who does not seem that great at start but someone who heroine found difficult to compete with even with heroine's 10 years of friendship.
So l totally got the failure as heroine concept because the character which heroine is playing is most of the time shown as wicked second female lead who does not like her long time friend and potential boyfriend being stolen by the female lead. And that is why it was very refreshing to see the story from heroine's point of view
In all the story has many known scenarios but it is the execution which catches our heart. Speaking of execution, l found it very similar to the Japanese anime and all funny scenes silmilar to anime were entertaining.
If you are a fan of shoujo movies then l would definitely recommend this movie
Even if you are not a fan of such jounour it is worth one time watch.
