Is this show horrible? Yes, but not horrible "Ugh,", but horrible "Weird".
Before I watched this drama, I'd seen it on different platforms as one of the worst and most ugly shows they had seen, so I did not expect too much from it. But surprisingly, this is much better than the worst dramas that I have watched.I'll start with what I like about this show. First are the characters; all of them are good when it comes to acting, though I find the character of the male lead (Jung Yoo) lacking, but I guess that is really how he should portray his character given his background. I like the mystery that is happening about whether you really know the male lead or not. And the growing relationship between the two main leads.
Now let's tackle what I find weird. First, everybody in this drama is just obsessed with anyone. And second, the male lead. He is interesting at first, but as the episodes go by, his weirdness is just scary weird, not cute weird anymore. I do find Hong Seol and Jung Yoo adorable, especially that they understand each other, but their relationship is just so fast and didn't get a proper buildup. The male lead looks 10 times older than the female lead, too.
I'll just give this a 7/10. It is not unpleasant; I actually had fun watching this "horrible" drama. It is just that it is weird, there are a lot of annoying characters, and the ending is rushed and a disaster.
(I hope this review made sense.)

Despise love triangle !!!!!
The webtoon was extremely well-written, with an interesting plot and complex characters. When I realized there was a drama adaptation of the webtoon, I was a bit nervous and excited. For a sixteen-episode drama, I think the writers did a decent job at condensing the story into 40 to 60-minute episodes. Of course, it had its flaws. The webtoon provided an in depth look at the characters, and I think the drama failed to do that.
What I liked about it though is the cast. Park Hae Jin did a good job of portraying Jung's multi-faceted personality. Kim Go Eun and the rest performed really well too.
Overall, it could've been better. If only they gave the drama more episodes (about 20-24 eps), then the story wouldn't have felt so rushed. 16 episodes are not enough to contain Soonkki's masterpiece.
I would love to see a revamp of Cheese in the Trap with longer episodes and the same cast.

Sassy Go Go is everything Cheese in the Trap Should've Been
I have never been more annoyed by a drama than I was with CIT. It was frustrating to watch the director lead Park Hae Jin through a maze of no redemption. I started out watching this drama because of Kim Go-Eun but continued watching for Park Hae Jin. It's a shame the drama's director took the direction they did with his character. Kim Yeol's character from Sassy Go Go was spot on what Park Hae Jin's should've been, but adjusted for maturity and a deeper context. I'm just laughing at all the "Second Male lead Syndrome" cooers because the second male lead was practically the male lead in this drama. The director gave him everything the male lead should've had-lots of screentime with the female lead and a redemption arc. I wish they did better because the storyline had such potential and I was glued till the end but ended up annoyed and disappointed. Was this review helpful to you?

Unresolved plot, yet satisfying
Cheese In The Trap ReviewGenres: Unconventional, Quirky, Mind Games, Romance, Friendship and Family
Supporting characters play their parts very well, and they make friendship look great, “I’ve always got your back” cliche. The antagonistic characters also have a slightly sympathetic past, which helps in understanding why they are what they are.
The spotlight is on the FL& ML relationship, pretty obvious plot yet not your pink clouds and rosy path relationship.
ML is all about manipulating situations to his advantage. The mind games would be a treat to you if you like the darker side of things. But it isn’t something out of the blue, it’s what people do everyday, just in smaller proportions and frequency.
As you keep saying watching you will understand why FL chose ML, very weirdly FL finds warmth and solace within this relationship and I get it too (call it twisted?¿). She understands and lives within his insanity as she’s got a little bit of it as well. ML is also one for chivalrous gestures, helps, loves, protects the FL but in his own manipulative way which is also a very interesting dynamic. The second male lead and ML have a complicated relationship, it’s not complete animosity, there’s a hint of friendship and family in there, which is better than you think it will be.
FL has the "I can fix him" mindset, and every time ML does something messed up she first assures him, that she will not leave despite his doings in order to not make him anxious(which actually seems to help(by a tiny bit)), ML begins to bond and care for her more each time, which leads to him realizing his flaws only when FL is in harms way which is at the very end of the show. I would have liked to see his changed self handle situations the right way which will account for his character development, but unfortunately did not get to see any of it.
I think the story could have gone a different way in the last few episodes, the characters of the orphan siblings were not compensated in the best way, there was no real repentance of the ML towards them which was suppose to be major considering their past. ML's father's character should have been given more screen time to tie up his wrongdoings properly. All these unresolved issues made me question why at the end.
What was definitely satisfying was the FL's family, their story was definitely wrapped up nicely.
Overall, I liked it because it was a different point of view compared to most kdramas and the story allows each of us to have our own stance about it, cast was absolutely amazing, ending of each episode got me hoping and a little excited for the next one.
Let me know how your watch went ;)

It could have been much, much better
I like complicated love stories when presented with maturity. The truth is that romance is not always “politically correct” and in the process of falling in love, it is easy to fall into dysfunctional relationships. On the one hand, I appreciate that this drama proposes a different theme; what if you fall in love with a guy who is gorgeous and nice to you, but hides a dark secret: he has sociopathic tendencies. The problem with this show is that it squanders its interesting premise and 16 episodes that turn out to be boring and strangely long. It's almost as if they were afraid to make Park Hae Jin's character more extreme, embellishing his attitudes and patronizing him. I think if they had made him a person who directly has no reason to be “evil”, or at least have sociopathic tendencies, it would have been more interesting since the justification turns him into a generic victim, a poor misunderstood person with whom we must feel compassion by force.
Anyway, there are good moments that are clever in their subtlety, dropping little hints about Yoo Jung's behavior. The performances are also quite competent, especially Kim Go Eun.

This review may contain spoilers
Overall, this series is meh. It could have been so much better. So many unnecessary and obnoxious characters. No one taking accountability for their actions and behaviors and blaming others the entire series. The ending was terrible as well. In-Ho was the only character with any redeeming qualities. I wished he would have disowned his sister. Nothing but a user and abuser. She should have stayed in that mental facility.
I was and still am team Jung til the end. He lacked empathy but I could understand that with the way he was raised and the father he had. The fact that he always had to be "on" would make anyone act a certain type of way. People constantly using him or pretending to be nice. So he saw something in Seol that he wanted to explore. Of course the relationship is toxic. It's practically a prerequisite in these series based on manwha, manga and webtoons. But I did like that she was trying to understand him and that he was trying to understand what is like to love and be loved for who he is.

Was this review helpful to you?
