In 1920s Shanghai, private detectives Zhan Tian Yuan and Liu Wei Yi run a detective agency while both loving childhood friend Rong Shao Juan. When Rong dies helping Zhan's case, their rift drives Liu to join the police. The connected disappearance of Xiang Jing Rong brings her daughter Zhang Zi Qing from abroad to the agency.
