It has one of the same characters and actually has some references to the show! New tales is pretty much continuing the characters story from Assorted gems :D
Both of these dramas star a female lead with a birth secret, who has a self sacrificial outlook on life. Both lead females are super depressing because their circumstances in life sucks, however these two characters still make you root for them, they are good inherently so you as a viewer wish they would finally find happiness. The day to day dialogues and outdoor events done by all the different characters are similar, both dramas have a slice of life quality to it that you don't see in long running dramas anymore.
Tachibana Ayaka is a young woman whose life has been ruined after she lost her boyfriend and then her mother became gravely ill. Looking for revenge, she starts out as a hostess with the goal of rising to become the "empress" of the Osaka nightlife scene. Date Naoto is a member of the underworld who becomes Ayaka's ally.
One day, all of a sudden, Misaki, the number one hostess of a club in Roppongi becomes a high school teacher! Of all classes, she is appointed as the homeroom teacher for Class 2Z, a special class for the troublemakers at the school. But, with her positive power, she takes the students head-on, without ever giving up!
